There are three types of sear springs for Remington 870 shotguns:
-standard (4 to 5 lbs)
-competition (light pull, 3 pound)
-police (heavy, trigger pull between 5 and 8 lbs)

The Remington 870 shotgun has three types of sear springs including the standard, competition, and police. The standard sear spring gives a trigger pull of between 4 to 5 pounds. You will find this spring inside all Remington 870 Express shotguns. If you just use your shotgun occasionally for hunting or home protection then the standard should be fine. But if you are a competitive shooter or want to shoot fast then the competition sear spring will provide a much lighter pull at about 3 pounds. As for the police sear spring, it is a heavy duty sear spring with a trigger pull of up to 8 pounds. This is the safest and most reliable trigger pull because of all the effort needed to pull the trigger.

Most people use the standard sear spring in their Remington 870 Express shotguns. But you can replace or upgrade the spring to either the competition or police grade sear spring if you want it to perform differently. To begin the sear spring replacement in your Remington 870 shotgun, take a screwdriver and use it to compress the sear spring in the shotgun. Use your other hand to hold the spring as you are doing this. Next, remove the sear spring from the receiver, but make sure you hold it firmly or else the spring will fly away. Now you just have to install the new sear spring that you want to be installed in the shotgun. It is a very simple installation that should take you a minute at the most.

Make sure you choose a trigger pull that you are comfortable using but don’t make it too comfortable. The reason why you don’t want the trigger pull to be too light is because it will increase the chances of accidental discharge. The heavier trigger pulls ensure that you pull the trigger only when you are sure you want to shoot the weapon. Keep these things in mind when you consider replacing the sear spring in your shotgun. But even if you make a mistake and use the wrong sear spring, it is just as easy to switch back to the old sear spring as it was putting in the new one.
