Magpul SGA Stock and MOE Forend for Remington 870 Review
Magpul SGA stock, MOE forend and accessories for Remington 870 shotgun quickly became extremely popular after their release in 2011. Magpul is a well known manufacturer of high-quality accessories and upgrades for firearms. Remington 870 line of products is not an exception. Remington 870 SGA stock and forend were that popular that Magpul released the same furniture set for Mossberg shotguns. Magpul Hunter 700 stock (for Remington 700 rifle) which was introduced later has the same design and features. Remington even introduced Remington 870 Magpul Edition with Magpul stock and forend. That means that most of the users of Magpul SGA stock and MOE forend for Remington 870 were more than happy.
Stock and forend are designed with modern modular approach. This means that shootgun owner can easily cutomize stock and forend for different purposes. Ergonomics are great and every part is very well thought out.
Magpul did a great job and offered not only Remington 870/Mossberg 500 stock and forend but complete set of accessories for them. From spacers which can extend length of pull to forward sling mount which enables you to have a sling. What I like the most is that Magpul SGA Stock doesn’t have small parts and millions of small screws like many other stocks. Once installed it looks rock-solid.
Stock and forend available in several colors: black, Flat Dark Earth, orange and grey.
This is an updated review which covers all upgrades and add-ons.
Magpul SGA Stock for Remington 870
This stock comes with unique half-pistol grip which is something between pistol grip and classic stock. Angle of the grip is comfortable for the most of the shooters. It was very progressive and innovative design. All other manufacturers had classic stocks or pistol grip stocks. A lot of people which have seen first photos of the Magpul SGA stock called it odd and ugly. And actually you need to get used to this new modern design. Magpul SGA Stock has multiple add-ons which add very useful features.
This Remington 870/Mosberg 500 stock and forend are not only for tactical shotguns. Hunters and competitive shooters are very happy with it.
Installation is very simple and straightforward and takes just about 5 minutes. Just one screw to attach the Magpul SGA stock to Remington 870 and requires no modifications or fitting. Allen wrench for stock screw is included. The only tricky part is that you can get about 1/4th a turn with wrench before you get held up on the other side.
The half-pistol stock grip is pretty comfortable and enables easy manipulation. Grip section has some kind of checkering with small Magpul logos for better grip. It is good but still not as good as Hogue overmolded stocks with rubber coating. Angled handgrip grip is much better than pistol grip because all recoil goes to your shoulder not to your wrist. That is extremely important when you shoot a lot.
Magpul SGA stock for Remington 870/Mossberg 500 enables you to adjust Length of Pull easily using included spacers. Stock comes with one spacer installed and three spacers separately. The minimum length of pull you can get is 12.5 inches with all of the spacers removed. It is possible to adjust the length of pull removing just one bolt and inserting or removing spacers. You can easily adhjust LOP to have more maneuverability in a CQB, for home defense or when wearing winter clothers or body armor. You can make LOP longer when needed easily.
Some of the major complaints were about thin pistol grip which wasn’t comfortable for shooters with big hands, angle of the pistol-grip and heavy weight. Shooters with big hands complained about thin and short grip and that they can pull a trigger only with second joint of the finger. Angle isn’t comfortable for some shooters. Many complained about the weight of the stock compared to stocks of other manufacturers.
The butt pad is similar to stock Remington 870 butt pad. It is thick and little softer, bigger and reduces recoil little better. The Magpul SGA buttpad has grooves to have a grip on your shoulder, so it has less chances to move under recoil. It is possible to buy Magpul adapter to install any aftermarket recoil pad designed for Remington 870, for example the Remington Supercell butt pad. Remington Supercell Butt Padd for Synthetic stock fits Remington 870 SGA Butt Pad Adapter perfectly:
If you are buying Remington Supercell Pad, remember that it comes without screws, you need to purchase them separately.
There are many ways to attach a sling on Magpul SGA Stock. It has sling loops on both sides and also you may notice the holes with the plugs on the sides of the stock. When removed, it is possible to install quick detach sling point there.
Magpul MOE Forend for Remington 870
Magpul MOE Forend for Remington 870/Mossberg 500 has slots to install rails for additional MOE equipment. Newer version comes with M-LOK slots and compatible with all M-LOK line accessories.
The wrench to remove the fore end nut is included. It is made of plastic. Unique feature of the Magpul forend wrench is that you can use it without full disassebly of the shotgun. You don’t need to remove forend from your shotgun. You can just remove magazine extension and barrel and you will be able to use wrench to unscrew forend nut.
The forend is very well designed. It has grooves and hand stops. It enables you to position your hand comfortably and have a reliable positive grip.
Magpul MOE Forend can be used with 6-round sidesaddles.
ATTENTION: The Magpul MOE forend has a longer front end, which makes it impossible to use with front sling attachments installed between the magazine tube and magazine extension. That is why you will need Magpul Forward Sling Mount to attach a sling.
