Standard Remington 870 safety which works properly but too small to be quickly disengaged in stress (combat, self-defense, sport) situations. The only one safety which has a red stripe which is visible when safety is disengaged.

My favorite safety which I have installed on my shotgun. Works great and can be easily disengaged. Also, it doesn’t stick out much. After more than 5 months of use you can see marks on it but there is no damage on the material of the safety button.

Also, this is the only one oversized safety which can be used with Knoxx recoil reducing stocks.

Vang Comp Systems is a good safety but there are several problems with it:
1. Material is too soft. After 2-3 months of use I saw that material of the safety button was damaged, there were deformations on it.
2. Sticks out too far.
3. Cannot be installed with Knoxx recoil reducing stocks.

This safety is great, I would be happy to use it if I could install it together with my Knoxx recoil reducing stock. But it looks like it cannot be used with it.

The shape of this safety button is great and it doesn’t stick up much. I think this is the best choice for a standard stocks.

Summary
In my opinion the best choice for a recoil reducing stock is Wilson Combat (Scattergun Technologies) safety.
The best choice for a standard stock is S&J Hardware safety.

Thanks to this and your followers review I placed an order with S&J today for both their safety and their follower. I’ll let you know what I think.

I have the Knoxx Blackhawk Spec Ops NRS stock and the S&J Jumbo Safety works great with it since it does not have the recoil reduction option. The parkerized finish does not match my Espress but it works perfectly and is much easier and faster to use than the factory safety. I do not have to curl my finger and hunt for the safety with my fingertip anymore. I can keep my finger staight, push the safety off and fire all in one quick movement. I painted a red stripe onto it so that others will know when the safety is on or off. I chose the NRS stock because of concerns over reliability (moving parts can break), possible cheek slap and cost. I purchased the stock for $50 on Ebay, including shipping. Anyway, I use low recoil shells for home defense, so, recoil reduction is not a major concern for me.

Tried installing a GGandG oversized safety in my Remington 870 today. Install was no problem but when I would disengage the safety, it would not push far enough over to allow the trigger to be pulled. Even the larger head on the right side wasn’t going over far enough to touch against the receiver. I pulled it apart and then compared the GGandG safety with the original and noticed that the gap in the middle was different. The original has a 1/4 (or 4/16) inch gap while the GGandG was only a 3/16 inch gap. Also the centre ridge on the original was nicely rounded for the ball bearing to “roll over” while the GGandG was more sharp. Any thoughts?

    Scotty
well other then the GG&G one possably not being made correctly, these are the other factors i can see.
The factory parts mag have has the ball bearing changeed in size at some point?
You have lots the ball bearing and its the spring that cought up in the new safety( did you
reinstall the old safety to check all was ok?)
More then likly is the GG&G units not machined right.
But that being said the differences you posted inj sizes of the gap should not make a difference, as even the norinco/china made 870 shotguns work with the willson, vang and of course our S&J safety.
you should call GG&G to confirm
