There is one issue which you can experience with Remington 870. It is called “sticky chamber or a “rough chamber”. It happens often with cheap ammo. And you need to polish the chamber to be able to use any ammo you want. I have posted instructions on how to polish the Remington 870 chamber some time ago, but now I want to give you 3 more ways to polish the 870 chamber.

Remington 870 Extraction Problem – When to Polish Chamber

Here is video with Remington 870 extraction problem, if you experience such malfunction ofthen it is time to polish chamber:

Polish Remington 870 chamber with sanding paper

So, the first way, which is inexpensive but will take some time is to use sanding paper. I have used 320 grit, 400 grit, 500 grit, 800 grit, 1000 grit and then 1200 grit.

Polish Remington 870 chamber with Flex-Hone Chamber Tool

I decided to get the complete Flex Hone® 12 Gauge Set. The Flex Hone is constructed with hundreds of little balls that are abrasive to the touch and flexible enough to clean those tough to reach areas. If you have an older shotgun with an old barrel then the Flex Hone can clean and polish it properly to make it look new. If you already have a new shotgun with a new shotgun barrel, the Flex Hone will polish it up and make it look better than ever.

The Flex Hone is very simple to use. You just take some Flex Hone oil and wet down the hone with it. Put the hone into an electric drill that has various speed options and then, stick the hone into the bore of your shotgun’s barrel.

The Flex Hone comes in sets according to the gauge of your weapon. The most common set is the Flex Hone 12-gauge because it accommodates all universal 12-gauge shotguns like the Remington 870. Along with the different barrel hones included in this set, you will also get a hone for the chamber and 1 quart of Flex Hone oil. The price of the Flex Hone 12-gauge set is $63.99 and it can be purchased right through the Brownells website.

Make sure this is the oil you use on your hones because if you use the wrong oil or liquid, it could easily damage the tiny abrasive balls of the hone.

The price of the chamber tool is $52.99 which is not cheap but you will have tool which you can use in future with other shotguns.

Polishing a chamber on your Remington 870 is a good idea if you want to make it even more reliable.

This simple one-time procedure will make chamber as smooth as possible and will guarantee that you will not have problems with extraction of fired shells.

You will need: polishing compound and Dremel felt polishing wheel, add polishing compound on felt wheel and polish chamber accurately. I have chosen felt polishing wheel because it is difficult to overdo this procedure using it.

Why Polish Remington 870 Chamber?

Some of the newer Remington 870 shotguns have rough chambers. And they have a chance of a fired shell stucking inside the chamber. The more you shoot without cleaning your shotgun the higher the chances to get shell stick inside. This usually happened to me in the end of the competition after 100-200 rounds. Sticky chamber problem was fixed after the polishing. This is one time procedure and you will not need to repeat it.

You can see video with Remington 870 shell jam below. Such problem can happen to Remington 870 shotgun with chamber which has not been polished. The slide locks up tight and you can’t cycle a shotgun.
