From barrel size in relation to the receiver in the picture, this appears to be an older 20gauge 870 built on a 12 gauge size frame. The barrel may have been professionally shortened, if so it is probably a cylinder bore. Extra barrels are no longer made for the large frame 20 gauge so the used market would be the only source for other barrels.

Twenty gauge 870 serial numbers that end in “X” or “N” are large frame guns. Production ended in 1979 according to Remington.

Current 20 gauge 870's (including Express models) are built on a smaller frame.

Beautiful gun and even more beautiful price! I'm currently making payments on a 70's 12g wing master magnum in the same condition as yours with a 21" slug barrel and a 26" vent-rib. I'm paying 400$!! I would LOVE a 20g! I will post pics in a few weeks when it's in hand.

First post.

Foud a similar example for $100 this weekend. It has a 28" full choke bbl. I wasn't aware that the X or N frames didn't have replacement bbls available for these. this has matching serial numbers on the rcvr and bbl. It is date code "YY" and me thinks that makes it a 1952 (or there abouts).

1. Were all 20g in full choke?

What year was the 20g introduced?

When did the cease matching serial numbers to the rcvr?

1) No, 20ga 870 barrels were offered with several different choke options before the Rem Choke system was introduced.

2) The 20, 16, and 12ga 870s were all offered when the 870 was first introduced in 1950.

3) The alphanumeric code on the receiver is the gun's serial number. The markings on the barrels are date codes, proof marks, chamber info, and other things.

1950? wow, mine is only two years into production. Thanks for the info. I read on another forum that only the first couple years had bbls serial numbered to the rcvr. Then the practice was discontinued. This must be one of them.
