870 barrel shortened. now what?
870 barrel shortened. now what?
i recently had the barrel on my 870 shortened to "legal" length. i let a gunsmith do it because it was pretty cheap and i didnt feel like dicking around with it. the question i have is that i assumed they would re-spray the end of the barrel matte black, but instead it is raw metal. i asked them what should i do about the barrel end, and they told me just to keep it oiled. is this good enough?, or should i re-spray the whole barrel w/matte black paint?
Re: 870 barrel shortened. now what?
To better protect the raw metal you could use some cold blueing. Works very fast and easy to apply. Then just keep it oiled.
Don't buy it if you can't sell it.

All of my over&unders are bare metal on the muzzle.... never had a problem - just make sure it's clean after a shoot and oiled.

Clean it with brake parts cleaner then apply several coats of cold blue with a cotton swab, let set over night wipe with Break Free CLP as a matter of fact wipe the entire gun down with Break free. Great stuff!

I too have wondered the best way to protect after a cut.
I usually just tape the barrel and after a thorough cleaning I spray with a quality matte black paint. I have also blued the end once. I have also left the cut raw. Have had no problems but I do maintain my guns well.
Good question.
