Discuss all accessories and upgrades available for the Remington 870 shotgun: stocks, forends, barrels, chokes, magazine extensions, followers, safeties, sights etc.
I recently picked up a Remington 870 for home defense, and I’m looking to make some upgrades to optimize it for that purpose. I’d love to hear your recommendations and personal experiences with different accessories and upgrades.
Here’s what I’m considering so far:
Tactical Light: I’ve been looking at the SureFire DSF-870, but it’s a bit pricey. Are there any other good options that provide reliable illumination and are durable?
Sling: I’ve read that a good sling is essential for maneuverability. Any suggestions on a comfortable and durable sling that won’t get in the way during use?
Extended Magazine Tube: Thinking about increasing my shell capacity. Does anyone have experience with the Wilson Combat or Nordic Components mag extensions? How do they hold up?
Stock Upgrade: I’m considering a Magpul SGA stock for better ergonomics and adjustability. Has anyone tried this, or should I look into other options?
Sights: I’ve seen mixed opinions on ghost ring sights versus red dot optics. What do you all prefer for quick target acquisition in a home defense scenario?
Side Saddle: I’m leaning towards the Mesa Tactical sidesaddle for extra shell storage. Is it worth it, or do you recommend another brand?

I just went with the Streamlight for 870 as it’s much less $ than Surefire.
I also just added the Magpul SGA. While I haven’t shot it yet, in practice around the house it’s been nice.
Either mag extension is good to great. I believe Remington also makes/made one. A lot of the 870’s have a dimple in the end of the factory ’base’ magazine that you will have to press out (there are special tools) or I just used a dremel.
I don’t like ghost rings for HD/CQB applications. They take longer to acquire than beads or red dots typically. The ghost rings can be better for slugs at longer ranges.
For slings, it’s a Magpul or especially Blue Force Gear. BFG makes a nice padded sling too. Attachment can vary, but I like the quick adjustable slings.
I like Esstac shotgun cards as opposed to a hard mount, but do whatever makes the most sense for you.
Only other item you may want to look into is the Wilson Big Head dome safety. I like it on the HD gun.
