I just was gifted a very nice 870 LW Magnum in 20ga. It's a gun I was gifted by my best friend I have known and shot with since 1982. He passed away a few months ago and had made sure I got my choice of guns from his collection. This is one of the six I chose. he had over 60 guns I could have had, but I chose based on personal reasons. I had a 20ga 870 once and in a stupid move got rid of it for a big profit. Missed it ever since. What I would like to know is what form of sporting clays would this gun have been used for? After I moved back to New Mexico from California where we were friends, he never told me much at all about his competition and was so far from being a bragger he never told me much of anything.
Here's a pic of the gun. I'd love to know what he may have shot it in. I am waiting to try and find more from his fellow competitors but would like to know from you guys here.
here are some snaps of the gun.

Re: Education from the learned needed!
Congrats on it. The choke should have some markings on it, something like MOD or IMP or SKT. Those markings will give us a clue, as for example, SKT is a skeet choke so he may have shot sporting clays with it. There aren't many pump guns used in competition except in singles trap, as most doubles require more speed of an autoloader or over/under, although the old guys set world records with pump guns back in the day. You may have to pull the choke out (unscrew it) to see who the maker and what the rating is, but that looks like a Carlson's Extended choke.

It's a Briley stainless Skeet. I also got 2 each mod, imp cyl, and full. And a 24in barrel, and this 28in. Both vent rib.

Re: Education from the learned needed!
So it looks like the PO was into some clay sports, but not much more "specific" can be known. All of those chokes can be used for all clay sports, but the skeet choke is pretty specific (although to the truly learned, it's not much different than IMP MOD). The longer barrel is probably for clays, the shorter barrel better for hunting.
ETA: Briley makes good chokes.
