First Glock 19 - Tips?

Post by gWebber »

Very soon I’ll be picking up my shinny (well shinny for a Glock) .. Glock 19 CA legal 9mm ... I can’t recall the Gen version at the moment.

Anyway, I’m trying to think of some accessories that would be suitable for use for a Range/HD pistol.

The Glock of course comes with its basic case and cleaning brush and the CA approved cable lock ... which I personally find to be junk that a ten year old could get open.

I tried looking at some of the Glock Forums , but they seem horrible and over stuff with ads.

Hoping a few people here may have some accessory or shooting tips for a first time Glock owner.

The big question is have you fired a striker-fired handgun before, or always hammer-fired? The trigger pull is something to get used to, midway between a DA revolver and a SA pistol. NOT fumbling for a safety also didn't come natural to me. Lots of folks add the beveled magwells for faster mag swaps. Does yours have the accessory rail under the muzzle? I've owned 2 G-17's, but as the man says, ain't my cup o' tea.

I’ve had some experience with DA & SA pistols, though not a ton.
So I’ll be learning the feel from scratch really having never had an auto before. I do understand the basics of it.

Stupidly I can’t remember if it has a rail or not. I was so wound up about FINALLY getting ahold of one I didn’t pay attention to every detail I should have (Duh). Glocks are like searching for hens teeth in some parts of California, the one I managed to get was originally ordered by the shop back in April and I bought it the day it arrived in OCTOBER! and it was one of two that came in and they had ordered six or eight.

I have considered a magwell, though I doubt I’ll have need for speed loading, but it seems like a nice feature to have.

Assuming it has a rail and it’s likely for HD/Range .. as getting a permit to carry here is nearly a non- starter .. a light of some kind maybe an option in the future.

I have Eyes & Ears, not sure if I need anything else for range shooting.

LOTS of ammo, and that may be the hardest thing to get these days.

One word of advice because I see this ALL the time at the range, is don't try to be a distance "hero". I volunteer at a 50ft indoor range, and you see a lot of new people with their first gun show up and run the target all the way out to 50ft, and then wonder why their accuracy is poor. Start at man-on-man HD distances, 10ft, 15ft, etc. Get comfy, make sure all the holes are in the center of mass, and then slowly increase the distance.

Kinda funny that so far, I’ve gotten better tips on owning a Glock here than I have at the Glock forum.

Those are great words, so thanks and that comes from all the members here who contribute. And that's the kicker... a certain %'age of society is idiots, and the larger a forum gets the more that %'age becomes visible. Here, yea, we may be small, but the clowns and "experts" don't stay too long because the audience doesn't feed them. Gimme small and interested every day. I may not know it all, heck there are legions of gunstuff that I don't know. But we'll tell you when we don't know and if we can help, we try.

I got four bits of advice from the Glock Forum, not bad advice, just felt a bit obvious to me, but then again, I’m not a total first timer either.

Here’s their list.

1. Get a good cleaning rod and kit, Pro Shot was suggested.
2. Dummy Rounds or Snap Caps for dry fire.
3. Don’t “limp wrist” or it may not feed the next round.
4. Buy lots of ammo as it’s been hard to get lately.

So as I said, not “bad” advice, but I was hoping for something more substantial given it’s a Glock based forum.
