Best sights for all purpose hunting?

Post by Bytal »

So im getting my hunting license soon and im wondering what kind of sights you guys and gals would recommend for good all around hunting purposes (waterfowl, small game, and deer and black bear.) Ive got a super mag with 26" ribbed barrel and most of our hunting land around here is heavily wooded asides from a bunch of logging cut blocks. At first i was thinking a low powered scope would help with the big game stuff, but it would probably be very counter productive for waterfowl and upland game. So now im wondering about red dot or just one of those high vis red or green fiberoptic tube sights.

Thanks

You've hit on it. A waterfowl shotgun is pointed, not aimed as a true shotgun should. But that won't help for deer or blackbear. You'll want a scope there or iron sights, neither of which are useful in waterfowl or upland game birds. You best bet is separate barrels, a slug barrel perhaps with the fixed cantilever scope mount, and a true ventilated rib fowl barrel.

Thanks for the reply scorpion. I was looking at rifled barrels, but butween the cost of that barrel, a scope, and the price of sabots im a decent way towards money for a proper hunting rifle. I was hoping to use the shotgun for a year or two until i can save up for a nice hunting rifle to more effectively go for big game. In the mean time i was hoping to just take the shotgun out with a single barrel and multiple chokes/shells and be somewhat prepared for whatever i may come across.

Ah, the one-gun-does-all. You can, but it's a lil' harder than that. I would not go duck hunting and be caught fumbling with chokes when a black bear got wind of you. Grab a RemChoke cylinder bore ($20) to use with slugs. Then grab a saddle-style scope mount that attached via the trigger group action pins. Then you can use the shotgun for winged-fowl as a shotgun, and later put on the scope and slug choke to use with slugs. Its not optimal to not use a slug barrel, but you can get away with it.

A sight for all purposes? I guess it's hard to achieve that.

Most sights are application specific to get the best result.

asking "the best sights for hunting" is akin to asking "the best car". sadly, really not a one size fits all prospect.

97% is going to be individual taste. for waterfowl, I'd say a fiberoptic bead would be a great choice. for deer, I'd be adamant that a standard ramp sight is the way to fly.

3 other people would say that I'm a stark raving whack job.

best advice I can give, is, either ask a few people You know that Have different sights, and, see what feels best for You.

as far as "optics" (red dot, and such), maybe for deer, no way for anything that flies, unless You hunt aircraft (which, I cannot, in clear conscience recommend). also, the anticipated distance is a huge factor with those.
