870 Express Super Mag / SPR453 barrel compatibility?

Hi, I used to own a Remington 870 Express Super Mag, 12 ga., 28" barrel, 3.5" chamber. This was stolen from my home 8 years ago and I recently found out that it was recovered by the police, but the barrel was cut...The new "owner" was charged with 2 felony weapons crimes (justice was served!).

The police won't release the shotgun to me because the barrel is now illegal, but I'm wondering if I can remove the barrel from my Remington semi-auto SPR453 12 ga., take it to the police station, and swap the barrel on the 870 Express. I'm guessing that the answer is no, but figured that I'd ask the board to confirm. Worst case scenario is that I will have to buy a replacement 870 barrel before they will release it to me. No, Spartan 453 barrels have a different barrel extension that won't fit into 870 receivers properly.

Will the police really not just give you your shotgun back without the barrel? If not, you could try borrowing an 870 barrel from a friend just to get the thing home. Any standard 12ga 870 barrel meant for receivers with 4-round magazine tubes will be compatible with your SuperMag receiver, even those with 3" or 2.75" chambers.

Turns out that they removed the barrel and will let me take home the receiver with no barrel, but the guy I spoke with had to run it up the chain for approval.
