Checking in from Michigan

Post by GunnerGSP »

Hello from Michigan...

I recently purchased a Rem 870 to go along with my Glocks and Ruger 10/22.

The 870 will be my "project" gun. I have all sorts of mods planned for it and look forward to any recommendations you all have.

My 870 has the 18.5" barrel with the +2 factory extension.

Recommendations on my first upgrade?

(P.S. not interested in a pistol grip) ;)

Well, if yours came with the solid rubber buttpad, I highly recommend switching that out for a Remington SuperCell pad. They're only about $20, and the difference in shooting comfort was night and day for me.

Apart from that, there's nothing on an 870 that really needs to be replaced (barring defects). It's a real solid gun and everything just works once you clean out all the factory grease and whatever else it picked up before you bought it, then run a bunch of shells through it to break it in. So I guess the question is more on you; what do you want to add to it?

By the way, what Glocks do you have?

Thanks for the reply...

I like the Remington mag extension, but really like the look of the Nordic. A cursory look online shows them hard to find. I was also looking at replacing the follower with a Nordic or S&J.

My Glocks are models 17 and 26, each a gen 4. Like 'em both very much...

I also have my eye on a Glock 20 (10mm).

For defensive builds, I prefer the steel Remington extensions over the aluminum Nordic parts for their simplicity and durability. For just the +2 or +3 kits that fit under combat barrels, I doubt the steel adds a noticeable amount of weight. I also have a bayonet for my shotgun (mostly just for fun, but I'll be bringing it along if I ever go pig hunting), and the Remington extensions are designed to mount one, while most aftermarket kits aren't.

If you're sticking with the Remington extension, I'd avoid the Nordic follower. Remington extensions have a follower stop built in, and the extra length of the Nordic follower will reduce your magazine capacity slightly if the two are used together. I have an S&J follower in mine, and am extremely pleased with it. If you want metal though, there are some other good aluminum and stainless steel options out there that are a normal length.

I'm the same way, but with a different caliber. I have a Gen4 Glock 31 (.357 SIG), and I'd like to add a 33 to match it. I wouldn't mind picking up some 9x19 magazines and barrels at some point though, which would effectively convert them to a 17 and 26 when desired.
