Hi - new member here with a question on the 870 safety operation.
I am repurposing an older Wingmaster field gun (28" single bead barrel) to a home defense weapon. I've installed a new 18-1/2" barrel, 2+ magazine extension, Meprolight front night sight. Still have more to order & to do. I bought this gun many years ago well used, always with the intent on doing what I am doing now.
The gun has 1 strange characteristic. It is a right handed gun - meaning the shells eject out the right side of the gun. However, the safety is set up as a left handed safety - meaning to put the gun on safe, you push the safety button from the right to the left. To take the gun off safe, the button has to be pushed from the left to right. As a right handed shooter, to take the gun off safe I have to change my firing grip so my thumb can deactivate the safety from the left rather than just sliding my trigger finger to the button on the right.
One of my yet-to-do projects is to purchase & install a Timney "870 Trigger Fix" kit, along with a new tactical safety button. My question: when installing a new safety button, can it simply be oriented with the larger dome on the right & operate like a "normal" right handed safety?
Safety Operation
Re: Safety Operation
The trigger group housing on the 870 where the safety spring and detent or ball bearing sits, is wider on the left and narrower on the right. This makes a traditional safety on the 870 not reversible. There are a few aftermarket safeties available that are made wider to allow it to be reversed, you may check out LumleyArms and Fortmann
