Removing paint from shotgun barrel

Post by Sidney »

Hi have a Remington 870 Wingmaster barrel and the prior owner had it painted green, I would like to safely remove the green paint so I can have it looking like the original blued gun metal look. Anyone know what I can use?. Thank you in advance for help replies.

If it's really paint than any good stripper will take it off. If it's ceracote, duracoat or other coating it night be a bit of a challenge. Call them.

All that aside, be prepared to re-blue your barrel because for any coating to stick well, the metal has likely been sanded or roughed up.

When I was a pup with my first shotgun, the barrel finish was a mess. I sanded it smooth and rubbed on some blue in a bottle and it same out great for the couple dollars I spent. Old 20ga bolt shotty. It was cool.

I recently picked up an old Ithaca Model 37 that the previous owner had sprayed the receiver gloss black.
I used CitriStrip stripper on it and the paint came off easily. Use protective gloves. Spread the stripper on with a brush. Wrap it in plastic wrap so the stripper won't dry out. Let it sit for several hours and the paint will come right off. Work great on wood if you are refinishing gunstocks too.
The smell isn't as strong as some strippers.
