12ga inert shells for practice
As described, looking for inert shells to practice speed loading. Would like to find some that are about the same weight as live shells. Recommendations?
Re: 12ga inert shells for practice
Just as an experiment, I built some. Haven't used them a lot, but they seem to work.
I got some fired shells and wads. Pushed the spent wads back into the shells and then I filled the cavity with silicone. After it dried I trimmed the plastic shell to the proper length.
I could have just filled the shell with silicone, but that's a lot of silicone, so I used the wad. I also thought this would "balance" the shell more closely. I haven't weighed the shells but the solid plug of silicone does feel close in weight.
I thought about marking them somehow but currently I rely on the fired primer and large silicone plug as the only marker.
I'm too cheap to buy a half dozen or so of Snap Caps.

Made a few out of spent hulls. Trimmed spent hills to "real" length of real shells. Knocked out spent primer, filled hole with hot glue. Some hulls filled with hot glue (boy did it take time... and glue sticks). In some, put a few 1 oz. fishing sinkers, filled remaining space with hot glue to the top. Work like a charm. If one is determined, can "customize" the weight of thus-constructed dummies to one's liking.
Instead of led sinkers, pretty much anything can go in, and "sealed" to the top with hot glue. Also possible to alternate "filler" with said glue to prevent rattling of the "stuffing". Thsnksgiving is coming to the US soon...

You can also use the reddish aluminum snap-caps or action proving dummy rounds, available almost any gun store.
