Magazine Tube Threading Stripped

Post by bookmanwv »

I installed a magazine extension on my 870 and successfully stripped the end of my magazine tube. Yes it was a stupid move and there's a broader story here but I do have a question. Is it possible to remove and replace the factory magazine tube? I have looked at it and tried to find my answer on the web but I have yet to find an answer. I would like to avoid sending it to Remington or a gunsmith to have it repaired. If I can replace it that would be great.

Any help would be appreciated guys.

Thanks for your help

While it is possible to replace the tube, it is a major job because it is silver soldered in place along with the rear barrel support. The job requires a special jig to hold everything in place and the skill to do the job. After all of the heating and soldering a refinish will be needed. Depending on what you paid for the gun, it could cost more to repair than what you have in it. I have shortened tubes, but never replaced one.

I had a feeling that was the case. So rethreading it is probably my only option?

Thanks for the response.

If you cut and rethread the magtube the barrel and fore end will no longer fit without major modifications. You may be able to have the bad threads welded and recut. The tube has a 1.0-12 square thread.

It would be a good candidate for a super shorty. ;)
