I have my Uncle's 870 to work on. He recently acquired it at a low price.
The gun jammed on the first shot.
Badly.
The 12 gauge round was completely stuck in the barrel and the action would not move.
I removed the barrel at home, retrieved the expended cartridge and found a large bulge on the brass!
Upon further exam I found a corresponding “dent” or machining error in the breech of the removed barrel.
I have 2 other 870s to compare this to and neither has this indent.
Attached are links to pics of the barrel and the shell.

What does everyone think? Is this barrel toast or could there be another problem?
Thanks!

Re: 870 Jamming Badly!
You will have to take better pics. I can't make out what is wrong. From what you are saying there is a dent in the
chamber. If so that barrel is trash. Try for some better pics.

Here are a couple more pics of the damaged barrel and the bulged shell casing. The bulge on the brass matches the "dent" or whatever it is inside of the chamber.
Sorry for the crappy pics....this is the best my old cameras can do. I hope they are usable.
I think the barrel is toast.....what about you guys?
The gun is fairly new (1 or 2 years), I wonder if Remington would do anything about it?
Thanks in advance for any info!

Re: 870 Jamming Badly!
It's still hard to tell from those images, but If the problem is as you describe it, I'm with 72Cheyenne. You'll most likely need a new barrel.
As for whether this is a factory defect, I highly doubt it. All 870s are test-fired at the factory (to the best of my knowledge), and if the chamber is as bad as you're indicating, that should have been noticed. Unless that's a low-end aftermarket barrel, my guess would be that some ham-fisted former owner took a dremel or grinding wheel to the chamber, trying to "polish" it without really knowing what they were doing.

Re: 870 Jamming Badly!
Thanks for the input.
It's a Remington Barrel.....It does have a bunch of inspection stamps on it from the factory.
I think you're right.....the chamber was probably "modified" by some dummy, for whatever reason!
I have 2 others 870's and neither has any dents or divots like this one.
Time to look for another barrel.
I have found a few (Gunbroker, Amazon, etc.) from 100 bucks (NORINCO) to $200+.
The owner (my Uncle) wants it fixed correctly....so probably no to the NORINCO!
Thanks for your help!
I just found out my daughter has a good camera....maybe I can get a good pic from it to post.....just for the Hell of it.

Re: 870 Jamming Badly!
The best place to look for new factory barrels is Remington's parts price list. It'll have the best selection, and it usually has the best prices as well. More information here.
Re: 870 Jamming Badly!

It almost looks like tool chatter marks in the indent....what a waste of a nice barrel!

Re: 870 Jamming Badly!
That should make a nice paper weight.

Re: 870 Jamming Badly!
I was thinking maybe a pry bar or a snipe if it'll fit over a 1/2 inch breaker bar!72Cheyenne wrote:That should make a nice paper weight.
