Extractor

Post by 12GAfun »

about how far out is a non-mim extractor going to eject your spent shells. since I polished my camber they barely fly out now but do eject though. If this is normal or maybe I have a bad extractor please let me know. Ever since I got this 870 I have had issues with it. It still shoots though but gives me problems from time to time.

I don't think it matters if the extractor is mim or non-mim for shell ejection. You will need to look at the ejector spring.

I have a MIM extractor in my 870, and it ejects fine. A bad extractor can contribute to ejection problems, but it shouldn't matter if it's a MIM part or a machined part. And 72Cheyenne is right that the extractor isn't what ejects shells, the ejector & ejector spring do that. The extractor just pulls the shells out of the chamber, and holds onto one side of the rim while the ejector & ejector spring push forward and out on the other side of the rim, flipping the shell out of the ejection port. I'd look at those parts before the extractor.

Also, remember that the 870 is actually a member of a semi-automatic shotgun family. It's going to be most reliable when you work the action fast and hard like a gas system would. Slow-shucking is often a contributor to ejection problems, especially with cheap low-base hulls that are light and very tail-heavy.

Thanks for the info all. I have been looking at my spring and it seems a bit loose to me not as springing as it was when I first got it. I hope that this spring is not messing up on me. What is the best way to tell if you extractor spring is messed up. Thanks again for all the replies.

If you take the gun apart and remove the action and TPA from the receiver, you can properly inspect the ejector spring. Without the breech bolt in place, the back of the ejector spring should stand out from the ejector, and it should spring back quickly if you hold it down and then release it. It should be fairly obvious if something's wrong with it.

Keep in mind that the ejector spring is mostly just a helper for the 870's ejector, which works the same way the ejectors in the 870's semi-auto siblings work. The spring gives shells a little extra push to make sure they clear the ejection port even if the user isn't working the slide very firmly. 870s chambered for narrow 20ga and smaller shells don't even use ejector springs. The point is, if your ejector spring is just slightly weak or worn, it shouldn't make much of a difference, especially if you're racking your gun like you have a pair. If there isn't something obviously wrong with your ejector spring, don't kill yourself trying to test its stiffness or whatever; it's probably not the main cause of your issues.
