Where can I find police trade in Remington 870 shotguns?

In another post I mentioned I would like to buy either a new 870 Police or a used 870 Police that is more of a 1960's to 1980's vintage shotgun. I've been looking on gunbroker and so far the vintage models are few and far in between.

Same goes for GunsAmerica and GunsInternational.

Does anybody know of a source I may not know about? There must be millions of these old blued Wingmaster Police shotguns but I'm not finding them. I'll attach a photo of the style I like most, I found this photo on the internet. I saw on exactly like this sell for $305 on gunbroker a couple weeks back, but the seller did not have a photo of the right side of the gun and I learned the hard way never to buy a gun that is missing a photo of one side of the gun. Is $300 to $400 about what I would expect to pay for one of these exact models in about 75% to 90% condition?

I do intend to advertise a "want ad" on this website but I've seen none for sale in the "for sale" classifieds thus far.

Thank you for any advice you can provide.

Is the gun in that picture missing its carrier?

Anyway, I'd say keep an eye on online auction sites, and I know a lot of people have found old duty 870s in pawn shops and gun stores, so you could check around in your area.

You're smart to want to know details, especially with older 870s, since a lot of them are non-magnum models (serial numbers ending in "V") that won't cycle 3" shells properly. This may or may not matter to you, 2.75" shells are the best choice for combat/defensive roles and there are some pretty capable 2.75" short-magnum loads out there, but if you plan to use this for hunting (which you can do by just changing the barrel) or you just want to shoot some big shells for fun, 3" capability can be nice to have. Either way, it's good to know what you're buying.

I don't know Remington 870's enough to know if it's missing the carrier, from what you stated I guess it should be visible somewhat given that the forearm is in the forward position. I found this photo through a google search for vintage Remington 870 Police guns, or maybe I used Wingmaster in the search bar, but that's how I found that photo.

I'm ok with being limited to 2-3/4" shells, we're still talking anywhere from 1200 ft/lb of energy for the low recoil stuff to as much as 2600 ft/lb of energy for some of the newest defense ammo.

Keep in mind I'm almost fifty/fifty on whether to buy a beaut old vintage Wingmaster or a new parkerized 870 Police. I would not feel shortchanged with either, last night I was looking at new in the box parkerized 870 Police shotguns with wood stocks. I saw one I liked but the brazing(?) used to hold the front sight bead shelf to the barrel looked sloppy and I'm trying to avoid that. Still, it was a magnificent looking gun, only five shots, I like the five shot, it just seems handier and they have a plus one extension that that only adds an inch. I just like the looks of the five shot more than the seven shot.

Anyway, I can ramble on about the beauty of fine firearms endlessly, so suffice it to say that these 870 Police models are very nice guns! Thanks again for the advice, and I'll remember the detail about the "v" in the serial number.

Whenever the action on an 870 is more than half-closed, the carrier should clearly be in the down position unless something's physically pushing it up and holding it there. If the action is closed but the carrier isn't down, the gun likely has missing or broken parts. This could be the carrier itself, or the spring that holds it in the down position. Neither are expensive or difficult to obtain and replace, but if the seller doesn't mention the issue, that should probably be a red flag.

As for Magnum vs non-magnum 870s, the latter can be converted to cycle 3" shells by replacing just two small parts (plus the barrel, if needed). So a "V" serial number suffix doesn't necessarily rule out 3" capability, or your options if you decide you do want to use 3" shells in the future. However, those parts are riveted in the receiver, and changing them is a bit of a job (especially if the old rivets can't be reused), so it's best to assume a non-magnum 870 is just that unless the seller can confirm otherwise.

Newer 870Ps are probably better guns from a functional standpoint (mostly for the new-style internals), but looks aren't the first priority, so the wood is fairly plane-Jane and everything gets Parkerized (I suspect the reason the brazing looked sloppy is because Parkerizing wouldn't stick to the bonding metal). Older 870Ps were essentially combat-configured Wingmasters with blued steel, chromed bolt & carrier, and a higher polish on the wood. I think Remington still offers blued 870Ps, but you'll probably still see function-first finishing on the wood (though you could certainly refinish the wood if you wanted).

Just curious......

What parts need to be replaced to convert a "V" suffix, non-magnum receiver to 3" capability?

A non-magnum receiver can cycle and eject crimped, unfired 3" shells just fine, but it needs to have its ejector and ejector spring replaced with magnum versions to reliably eject the longer 3" hulls in their unfolded state. The original rivets can normally be reused, but if not, new rivets need to be installed and ground flush with the receiver, and then the receiver will need at least a partial refinishing.

And of course, if the original barrel only has a 2.75" chamber, it will need to be replaced with a 3"-chambered barrel.

I just recently picked up a police trade-in 870 Police Magnum from Summit Gun Broker. They probably still have some in stock. They aren't the purdy wood furniture, but it's an 870P platform. Synthetic furniture, 20" rifle sight IC barrels, parkerized. I think mine's from 1997 from the barrel date code..it does have the new style flex-tab shell carrier. There's also a swivel sling mount on the mag cap, and another in the stock for 2-point. I have yet to shoot it, so can't report on that. Still need to tear it down and check out the internals and get some dummy rounds for an action check.

That is a darn good price for an awesome utility gun or project base. Thanks for sharing it.
