Hello and Happy New Year.
I just joined here because I am planning a few mods to my 870 18 1/2" bead sight gun. I don't know the proper designation, but it has a dull finish on both the wood and the metal.
We live in the bushes, separated from the Prescott Nat Forest by a mile of State Trust Land, and have been having cougar visits lately.
I think the new puppy is attracting him, her or them. We see tracks and my wife can smell them.
Anyway, the .410 breaktop snake gun seems not enough, so here I am. I have already added a light and an extended magazine, and will be searching the site and probably asking about more mods
I am an Army vet and an NRA Patron Member, and skilled with tools, but not a gunsmith.

Welcome to the forum. Your gun sounds like an Express model, basic but functional, and just as tough and reliable as any 870.
Were there any specific add-ons or mods you were thinking of? You've got the short barrel, magazine extension, and a light; find a buckshot load that runs well and make sure the gun is broken in, and you should be pretty well set for unwelcome critters of both two- or four-legged varieties. One thing a lot of folks like to have is alternate or extra ammo on the gun. There are plenty of good receiver-, stock-, and rail-mount options out there, but even just a $5 butt-cuff shell holder will work well enough for most home defense applications.
