870 20 gauge side saddle shell holder
870 20 gauge side saddle shell holder
I am wanting to add a side saddle shell holder. It seems that TacStar is the only brand that I have found and they only have a 4 round holder. Is there anything else out there. I was looking for a 6 rounder, but 4 is better than nothing. Also looking for a holder for my Knoxx SpecOps Tactical Stock. It seems that I can only find holder for a 12 gauge shell. Any more help?

Re: 870 20 gauge side saddle shell holder
There aren't a lot of options out there for 20ga receiver-mounted shell carriers, which is a shame, since the 20ga is such a great defensive round. I think Mesa Tactical offers some 20ga shell carriers, but I'm not sure. Their website doesn't do a very good job of listing all the different versions of their accessories.
If you don't mind sticking Velcro to your gun, fabric shotshell carriers like those from S&J Hardware might be an option:

If the 12ga loops won't hold 20ga shells tightly enough, they would be easy to close up a little with a sewing machine.

Knoxx SpecOps Tactical Stock is this made for the 20 gauge 870? I have been trying to find a good stock for my 20!Mcmar wrote:I am wanting to add a side saddle shell holder. The spec ops is made for the 20 but production is on hold until late this year or early 14'. POS Anyway in my opinion for what its worth. Unfortunately most will agree with me though.
Re: 870 20 gauge side saddle shell holder
Finding "tactical" accessories for a 20 is challenge. Most 870 upgrades are deisgned for the 12ga 870. I unfortunately have to agee with jball's opinion on that particular stock. I tried one, test fired with it mounted-Returned it next day. There are also a lot of other people who have had bad experiece's with that stock. I don't know where, or have seen any other options for "tactical" shellholders for the 20ga. The 20ga is more than adequate for a HD role, and a good all around shotgun, there is just not that many upgrade options for the 20, as far as i know.

IMO the Knoxx SpecOps stock is just fine for a home defense weapon. I have fired over 300 rounds (125 slugs) and I have had no problems at all. It is not the most expensive and probably not the most well made, but for the money and for its intended job it will certainly do the job.
Re: 870 20 gauge side saddle shell holder
I'm sure no is trying to insult "your choice" regarding the stock you've went with, or your opinions on that stock, i know i'm not tring to insult your choice. There are thousands of people who use that stock, many here on this forum. My comments on the BH SpecOps Stock come from my own research, reviews and my own personal experience regarding this stock, as do many others who are critical about it (even BH, who discontinued its own stock). With that said, if this stock works for you, and you're happy with it, then it's all good! Everyone has their own opinions, and choices on stocks and other modifications they use on their own weapons. If you're happy and satisfied with the BH stock, then that's all that matters. No disrespect meant to you personally. Good luck!Mcmar wrote:IMO the Knoxx SpecOps stock is just fine for a home defense weapon. Just purchased a 6 shot mesa tactical 20 ga shell holder from midway USA on sale for $56.00
Re: 870 20 gauge side saddle shell holder
I am really favorably impressed with the Remington 870 synthetic 7-shot 20-gauge as a defensive shotgun. There are a couple for sale hereabouts for about $470. Mid-South shooter's supply offers a four shell Tac Star side saddle in 20-gauge for about $25 or so...
As I've often stated, "if I had to do it over again" I'd opt for a 20-gauge defense gun over a 12-gauge. But I have a 12-gauge instead.

ATI and Choate both make replacement stockes and forends to fit the 20 guage 870, but as you have already seen the selection is limited. The 20 gauge has not been widely recognived as an HD weapon and has always had a reputation as being a youth or "girl" gun as it has much less kick than the 12 gauge. Upgrades and accesories are few and far between.
Mesa Tactical does make a 6 round side saddle for the 20 gauge, but if yours has the laminated forend like mine does, you will need to modifiy it so it doesn't contact the saddle. I had to do that to Gypsy's last month when I installed the saddle on her's.

Have a Dremel with a sanding barrel handy and it shouldn't take you more than an hour from the time you open the package for your new saddle to the time you have the weapon back together and function checked.
