Yea your right. Plus the fact you have to drill and press to get the mag extension on makes it a no go, didn't know you had to do that.

I will look locally for that model you recommended. Does it label it anywhere on the gun? That way I'm positive it's the right model.

The order number won't be on the gun itself, but the store should be able to confirm it for you. If it's not on their price tag, it should at least be printed on the gun's packaging. If nothing else, you can call Remington with the serial number, and they'll be able to confirm the model.

I found a local LE dealer that has a used Wingmaster with 20" barrel and an extended magazine tube for $250+tax. Also has a bead sight and wood furniture. Not exactly what I wanted but for the price it's hard to turn down. I can't imagine an 18.5" barrel will feel any different.

With the bead sight could I just get an xs big dot? They seem to have great reviews. Even more so than ghost rings.

What do ya think?

Well, a large front bead would work fine for defense, but you'd probably want something more precise for slug hunting. Does it have a choke at all?

I'd also check what length shells the receiver and barrel can handle. A lot of the old Wingmasters out there are non-magnum guns that can only handle 2.75" shells.

It'll depend on what you're doing. It would be best to just get a barrel that is threaded for interchangeable choke tubes, so you can switch chokes for different activities.

For defense, 2.75" shells are plenty, and there are plenty of great 2.75" hunting loads as well. For some types of hunting though, it's nice to have the option of using 3" shells since they can hold more shot, especially buckshot and larger birdshot sizes that don't pack very efficiently. Also, though the maximum pressures are the same, ammo manufacturers will often load 2.75" and 3" shells to different power levels. The 1-ounce Remington slugs I shoot, for example, are loaded for velocities of 1560 fps for the 2.75" loads, and 1760 fps for the 3" even though hull capacity isn't an issue with slugs, and Remington could load both to the same velocity if they wanted.
