Side saddle shell carrier doesn't clear foregrip

Post by Jamie »

Just received my S&J shell carrier, getting ready to mount, decided to rack and make sure nothing interfered, (this is good judgement, good judgement comes from experience, experience comes from bad judgement), anyway, my six shell carrier doesn't clear my Blackhawk foregrip. If it was 4 holders, it would clear, (easy enough to cut), I guess I'm going to look into grinding some clearance into the foregrip. Anyone else run into this?

The six-shot Tac Star/ Lyman will not work with the stock Remington factory forend. The cob-style works OK, however. I use a four shot myself anyway... One of the intended users of the HD shotgun can use weight to dampen recoil, but not so much weight that it becomes onerous to use one-handed... That, and I decided after a defensive shotgun class with the 6-shot version that the shotgun became just a mite bit too unbalanced.

Good luck with your conversion: Do you keep the six-shot side-saddle, or do you keep the forend you've got? :?:

Most fore-ends that cover an appreciable amount of the receiver when pulled back will interfere with 6- or 8-round sidesaddles. Folks tend to switch to a short fore-end to accommodate a larger sidesaddle, but you can certainly mill out part of the fore-end to fit around it if you want, I've seen that done as well.

I figured if I cut it down to 4 holders, it would work with no modification. If I trimmed the foregrip to clear, I was worried about grabbing it right where the new cutout is and maybe 'short stroking' by hitting the holder. Figured out if I pulled the foregrip all the way back, mounting the holder right up at the edge of the foregrip, the holder was a bit further back than I would like but it doesn't seem to cause any problems and I get all 6 on. I trimmed the edges of the backing as much as I could, every little bit counts. I guess a tactical class will be the test, (actually, coming up with the $ to attend a class is the test).

Finding the ammo for training classes is nearly as hard as finding the $$ . Hopefully things will "normalize" again over time.
