Hello from rural Missouri

I just bought some land in the country and finally moved out of the city. Now I am looking to get my first shotgun for home defense and some recreational shooting. I have the usual selection of varmits, including foxes, wolves, racoons, and others.

I have a couple of challenges and welcome input.

First, I am a tall guy, 6'4" with long arms, I wear a 38" dress shirt sleeve length. Most 870's I have tried have a length of pull which is very short and uncomfortable for me. Most aftermarket stocks shorten the length and get me all jammed up where I cannot operate the trigger smoothly. I tried another brand today with a 14.5" LOP and it seemed very comfortable, perhaps still just a tad short for me.

Second, due to a really bad motorcyle accident, my right forearm does not rotate properly, I cannot pronate or suppinate my hand. After four operations, 15 screws and two plates, the surgeon told me it is as good as it will ever be and to live with it and consider myself lucky to still have the arm and a hand that works. I have plenty of strength in the right arm, just limited mobility of the forearm and wrist. As a result, I have trouble using a conventional stock. A pistol grip that is nearly perpendicular to the barrel seems best, the ones that are angled back are less suitable.

Any recommendations on a pistol grip with longer than normal length of pull?

The MagPul from Remington has ALOT of different adjustments you can do to the stock to change LOP etc.

Any recommendations on a pistol grip with longer than normal length of pull?

There are quite a few AR-15-style stocks for the 870 that have pistol grips, and allow the LoP to be adjusted in less than a second with no tools. These adjustable stocks are especially nice if you have other, differently-statured family members that may need to employ the gun.

As an example, I've heard good things about Mako's adjustable 870 stocks. Their packages include options such as side-folding and recoil-reduction; and this review measures the LoP as adjustable between 12.5" and 15.5".




I have no personal experience with this specific model, and I usually avoid the added complexity of recoil-reducing systems (my general philosophy tends to be "nut up or get a 20ga"); not to mention that I feel a traditional sporting-style stock handles better in a close-quarters confrontation where you might need to swing the butt of the gun around and smack someone in the face or groin. In your case though, I think an adjustable AR-style stock would fit your needs pretty well, and there are a ton of options out there.

The Magpul stock Deerhunter28 mentioned has a large following for good reason, but in your case, it sounds like the grip angle would still be uncomfortable. Also the Magpul 870 model is one of the variants with the long mag tube, so your only options with that receiver are 18.5" HD barrels; not the best for hunting.

Speaking of barrels, are you looking for one barrel to fit all your needs, or would you rather have interchangeable HD and hunting barrels?

Thank you for the suggestions. I tried a gun qith a 14.5" LOP and it was almost long enough. I will try the 15.5" LOP AR style stock and see how that works.

Currently I am thinking of multiple barrels for my different needs. At first, I did not realize how easy it is to change barrels.
