Scratch on Receiver
Hello everyone !! Happy New Years !!! New to the forum and i have a question. Just got an 870 for X-mas and already put a scratch on the receiver and it's bothering me cause it's really noticeable. I hope to one day give this gun to my son and i don't want to give him an all-scratched up American icon. I'll try to attach a picture so you guys can see. I guess my question is, how do i remove scratches from receiver ? If it's even possible. Thanks and any advice would appreciated .

Re: Scratch on Receiver
Welcome to the forum, and congratulations on your new acquisition.
You can just use a little bluing compound (available at pretty much any half-decent store that deals in firearms) to re-blue the metal where the original finish was scraped off. If your gun has the Express finish, the bluing will offer a similar level of protection. If you have a parkerized gun, cold-bluing won't be as tough, but it'll certainly be better than nothing. The color with the new bluing may not be a perfect match, but it'll be a whole lot less noticeable than the bare metal.
While I don't abuse my 870, I don't exactly baby it either, and it has light nicks and scratches all over. I've never really had a problem with rust, and I don't mind the look of honest wear, so I only break out the bluing compound for really serious cases, or when I actively modify some part.

Re: Scratch on Receiver
I would just leave the scratch. It wont harm your 870. the only other thing you can do is make it in to a project gun with your son and then give it to him. You can always duracoat it. Plenty of youtube video on how to duracoat. Or you can have it parkerized.

Re: Scratch on Receiver
Thanks a lot guys. I think i'm going to try Bluing Compound first. If that doesn't do it, i'll Duracoat it

Re: Scratch on Receiver
If my dad gave me a shotgun id want it to be all scratched up with his experiences. what good is an off the shelf gun with no character for sentimental purposes. Just my .02

Re: Scratch on Receiver
It probably wouldn't be bothering that much if i hadn't scratched it so fast ( in less than a week of owning it). And it somehow happened while i was cleaning it
It's not even like i scratched it while actually using it

Here's a link with some reviews http://www.amazon.com/Birchwood-Casey-P ... e+Touch+Up Personally I think you're a long way from the Duracoat boat. Don't get me wrong, I love the idea but if you're going to go that route, go use the crap out of it first. I would even strip and rattle-can before doing that (And have done so with 2 guns) so you can be sure what you want the end result to be.
