Springs weaken over the action of compression/extension cycles, not being under compression. Load it up.

Related Question from someone very new to pump shotguns: do y'all keep the chamber empty because the safety only blocks the trigger but not the hammer? Why haven't there been any aftermarket mods that block the hammer?

Personally, the only weapon I keep with a round in the chamber are my 1911's ɓecause that is the right way. The 870 can be made ready in a nano second.
