Rifled slug barrel for Deer?

Post by ahcollier »

All,

Looking for advice. I am new to deer hunting & can't use rifle in my county, but can use shotgun & slugs.

Is there such a things as a rifled barrel for slugs for my 870? What's an ideal length & load for white tail out to about 100 yards?

What are some the better set-ups all ya'll are using for Deer with the 870?

Thanks, Andy

Hello Andy,
Welcome to the forum. Regular slugs (Brenneke type) are rifled to use with smoothbore barrels. There are rifled barrels available which use Sabot type slugs. The two types don't interchange well.
One of the better rifled barrels out there is actually made by Mossberg specifically to use on Remington 870s.

Thanks for the reply. What kind of barrel length is typical for rifled barrels? Is there a consensus among deer hunters about rifled barrel vs. Brenneke slugs? What are the pros & cons?

Thanks, Andy

Most slug barrels are in the 20" range. The bottom gun in this pic has a factory slug barrel with rifle sights. Directly above it is a Mossberg barrel built for Remington 870s rifled and with rifle sights.

Yes, there are rifled barrels for slugs for the 870. The ideal barrel length for white tail out to 100 yards will depend on the type of slug you intend to use. A 24" barrel is a good size for most slugs, but a 26" barrel will give you a bit more velocity. As far as load, you'll want to use a slug that is designed for your barrel size and the distance you intend to shoot. If you are shooting out to 100 yards, you'll want to use a sabot slug as they are more accurate and have a flatter trajectory. Lastly, as far as set-ups, you'll want to make sure that your shotgun is properly sighted-in and that you have a good quality scope or rifle sights. You'll also want to make sure that you are using a good quality sling so that you can carry your shotgun easily and comfortably.
