Hello!
I have a 870 12 gauge hardwood home defense and it comes standard with the 18.5" barrel. I want to get a longer barrel thinking a 26" but since it has the 6 cartridge magazine tube I can't figure out what barrels will fit. At the remington online store (which i have the link below) it states that it will accept standard 870 replacement barrels without modifications. But the forums on here say that any tactical 870 (classified as one that has a 6 cartridge magazine tube) will not accept standard replacement barrels. Does anyone have any personal experience or knowledge on this? Thank you, have a great day.

Re: 870 Hardwood Home Defense replacement barrels
I’m a newb, so take the following with a grain of salt:
It looks to me that your gun has a magazine extension installed from the factory for the added capacity. This would allow it to use all standard barrels.
There were models that had longer magazine tubes, with the barrel ring installed correspondingly further away from the receiver. These were the models that caused frustrations. I think there were spacer tubes available, from aftermarket suppliers, that allowed standard barrels to be installed on these guns.
HTH,
Dave

Dave's got it. Your 6+1 870 is of the old school configuration, which allows for easy barrel swapping. Traditionally, 870's had a 4-round mag tube (like yours).

Thank you both for your input. I bought a carlson's 26" barrel. So we will see how it goes!
