New 870 Wingmaster 410 hard to pump

Post by n4rod »

I purchased a new 870 Wingmaster a couple months ago. I noticed it was very hard to pump. I have 2, 12 gauge and 1, 20 gauge Wingmasters and although they were made decades ago, they are very easy to pump. I figured the more I shot this new 410 the easier it would get to pump. Not so. The more I pump it, the harder it gets. I took the barrel off and removed the forend assembly with the bolt and slide parts. I got out the Dremel Tool and polished both bars on the forend assembly, and the sides of the bolt slide. I oiled everything and reassembled the gun. Nothing changed. It's still very hard to pump. I removed the parts again and using Emory Cloth I polished the magazine tube where the forend assembly rides. No change. It's still very hard to pump.

Other than putting a couple thousand rounds through it, is there any other procedure I can use to make this gun pump easier?

Sorry it's been a while, I thought I had responded to this earlier.

I don't have much experience with .410 870s, but generally these guns only get easier to pump with use. If it's really stiff, to the point where you think something inside's hanging up or not functioning properly, you should probably take it to a gunsmith or some other knowledgeable individual and have them look over the action and trigger components for signs of problems.

Take the bolt out so you can see inside, and slowly work the action. See if the action bars are scraping or binding at some point, or look for scrapes and metal-on-metal contact inside the receiver. What does it feel like when it binds up, like something is getting jammed in between the sliding parts, or is there a "bump" where it's riding over the action bar or somesuch?

Thank you for the reply, and information , after I posted I did take it down and did just what you said to do, there was some rough edges and heavy ware spots that I stoned down made a big difference . Now I have 13-- 870s ,3-410s --3-20s --2 -28ga. and 5 12 ga. I also have a S&W 3000 pump that is a copy of the 870. one of my 870s is a police trade in , and all you have to do as look at it and it will cycle by its self its that smooth! :D I love the 870s and looking for more.

I think I ran in to a similar issue last night and this morning with my 870P Mag. This particular gun was was State Police trade in that I bought a few years back (two trades actually). The short story is that I wanted to restore one with my 18yo kiddo. The trade was all synthetic, shell carrier, Surefire forend light., and NO wood. It clearly needed a thourough cleaning as the action was pretty stiff/tight. Anyway the boy wanted wood and to remove all the tactical stuff so off I went!

Here's the problem. The castle nut wasn't budging. No way. So, I let it soak in liquid wrench overnight I got an overnight from Amazon for the castle nut tool. It took *all* my strength to finally bust it loose. I cleaned all the treads with RemOil and a toothbrush.

The corrosion was a fine white powder...like dissimilar metals/aluminum oxide. It also felt like the cops armorer cranked that sucker down under power or something. It was BAD!

Finally, I get it all cleaned up and went to slip in the action and slide the assembly back in. It WORKS but is now SUPER stiff. I took it apart again and the action tube that slips over the mag-tube is definite not round. The action is even stiffer than before.

I tried "swaging" out the tube with a socket and Extension (19mm craftsman) and tapping with a softblow. All to no-avail! It cycles with the pump, but is definitely not buttery.

Am I screwed and needing the whole forend/tube assembly, or should I lightly sand the mag tube, or reswage with the next biggest socket I have...I need advise! Otherwise this transformatoon is done with a spiffy! It LOOKS great!

Verdict is in. The tube was out of round (scuffing on the mag tube). Resolved with an ebay replacement. I like to follow up on my issues here!
