Well since barrels are interchangeable, you may never know which barrel it had. The easiest way used to be to call Remington customer service, but I don't know how that goes these days. Still you can chase down the year of manufacture of your receiver, and find a Remington catalog from that year and see what the offerings were.

I'd like to ask why? You can buy a replacement barrel in the length you need/want so why do you want to know what the original length was? :?:

It's never silly honoring our elders. Great idea. But Remington only made certain barrels. Lets us know the year and I'll look in my catalogs.

The barrel shows a code D S or it could be an 8.... imp cyl. If that helps...

That's fine.

But if you put a 36" barrel on it and then say you will use it as your primary HD gun I might smirk a little.

A "DS" barrel date code indicates Sept '69 or '98. Depending on the age guesstimate of the rest of the gun, how long did he own it?
