870 Modification More Reliable Fast Shooting

Post by Mosin9130 »

I read this review and it sounded very interesting to me, I'm trying to figure out how I could I get this done but upon checking the rails they do not seem thick enough to add such modification on the action bar. Unless it's welded or staked in some form added to the action bar?

I believe the extra material was built up weld that was then shaped & refinished, but it may also be a part that was made separately and then brazed or soldered onto the action bar. Either way, it's a job for a good gunsmith or some other equally-skilled & -equipped individual.

What do you use your 870 for? Unless it's a dedicated competition gun, I wouldn't recommend this modification, as it'll only really serve to add slide resistance and make shell change-overs & unloading the chamber more complicated.

well bought it with a field 28" barrel for hunting, bought a shorter 20" barrel for home defence I kind of like it better for home defence will be getting another for hunting.
I watched the video and loved the quick reload of it.
It would be cool to try that on a used beater 870.
I would do that modification on an 870 with a 9 round magazine tube and one in the chamber to total 10 rounds swweeeett!!!

For a recreational gun, do whatever floats your boat. I wouldn't recommend this modification for a HD shotgun, however. No one is realistically going to be shooting that fast in a defensive shooting; it's a waste of ammunition given a shotgun's limited capacity, and working the slide that quickly under the stress of a life-or-death confrontation is just begging for a short-stroke or some other user-induced malfunction. With a proper magazine spring and a realistic magazine capacity, an unmodified 870 can be fired as quickly as the shooter can get it back on target. With no real rate-of-fire improvement then, all this mod will do is make change-overs trickier.

I have an 870 express that fails to feed the second shell if I cycle it fast. It only does this when I shoot 3 inch duck loads it feeds reliably when shooting one and one eight ounce skeet or dove loads.

This makes me think the additional recoil is causing the shells to move forward and do the same thing.

You might pick up the police magazine spring which is stouter, and may stop that if you truly think that's where the cause lies. Or concentrate on solid working of the action. All pumps can be short-stroked in fast action without really knowing it.

This is 870 number 4 for me. I’ve been shooting them since 1964. The first is a wing master, other 3 are the express. Only one does this. The other two are flawless, but my sons have them.

If it was a short stroking issue I believe I would know it.

I have striped it and cleaned it and everything appears to be functioning as it should.

It’s driving me nuts in the goose blind. To the point that I am leaving it behind for the double barrel guns.

Sure would like to figure this out and find the fix.

Like Scorpion8 has suggested add a police magazine spring and I go one step further with an 1100 carrier spring. For about $13 your woes will be behind you for the next 30 or so years.

The above, or a high quality aftermarket (won't name names....brand loyalty is a personal thing, and, oftentimes not welcome)

Ok, the police grade spring and new aluminum follower arrived today. The new spring is 1/3rd longer than the one in the gun and the follower moves much smoother in the tube than the original plastic one.
I think this may solve the issue. I will report back after I range test it.
