Shell carrier parts needed for older 870 Wingmaster

Post by David LaPell »

I have an older Remington 870 Wingmaster 12 gauge, 2 3/4 inch only chamber. It has the earlier non cutout style shell carrier. I want to upgrade to the newer style since I plan on using this gun for my house/ defense gun. What parts do I need and does anyone know the correct model numbers? Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

To have the full flex-tab update, you'll need to install a new-style slide assembly, breech bolt, and carrier assembly.

These parts will generally be marked as intended for Magnum 870s (3" and shorter shells), but they're fully compatible with older 2.75"-only 870s as well. Stay away from any parts for Super Magnum 870s, as they're designed for longer 3.5" shells, and will not function properly in standard 870s.

All of these parts can be ordered directly from Remington's customer service department. If you're looking for part numbers, be aware that there are different versions of each of these parts, with different finishes. If you want to keep the same classic Wingmaster look, you'll probably want to look for chromed parts, but if looks aren't a big deal for you, any standard new-style bolt, carrier, or slide will drop in and function the same. You can download Remington's parts price list to see all the different options and their part numbers. Prices are also given in this list, but since it's from 2014, the parts may cost a few bucks more now.

Speaking of prices, buying new, you're looking at about $150 for all three parts before shipping, tax, etc. If you're looking to do this upgrade for a more wallet-friendly price, used parts are an easy way to save some money, especially with the breech bolt. You may have to play the waiting game to find really good prices and/or specific finishes though. Also, listings on Ebay or Gunbroker don't always come out and say whether the parts are old-style or new-style, so make sure to verify that the parts are new-style before pulling the trigger.
