New Wingmaster Issues
New Wingmaster Issues
I recently purchased a Wingmaster 12 guage. After have some feeding issues I swapped out the carrier dog spring spring, using the spring for the 1100. That worked, and solved that problem. I am now getting extraction issues. Last night at 5-stand have had two shells fail to eject jamming the gun. When I cleared the unfired shell from the chamber, I simply pushed the fore-end forward and ejected the shell from the chamber. No sticking or anything, which leads me to believe that the extractor is slipping off the shell. Is this common? I'm not sure if its user error or if the shotgun is to blame. I'm also wondering if it could be ammo related. I shot a round of sporting clays on sunday (50 rounds) using federal, no problems. I have shot about 500 rounds through the gun, mostly federal, some Rio, no extraction problems with either. Last night i used Rio and this is where I had the issues. I compared the shells and cant see any differences. I'm losing confidence in the gun. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Re: New Wingmaster Issues
So the bolt was opening, but the shell was staying behind in the chamber? That could be due to a faulty extractor, or it could be an ammo problem. Sometimes shells will stick in the chamber, and though the extractor has a good hold, the shell rim will give way. Was there any visible damage to the shell rims once you got them out of the chamber?
As for the feeding issue, what exactly was happening? The standard carrier dog follower springs should have no problem holding the carrier in place during chambering, even during fast cycling. The exact same spring is used in the 1100 for the same purpose (the 1100 spring you dropped in was a carrier latch spring, not a carrier dog follower spring).

Yeah the bolt was opening easily. The next round was feeding but the spent shell was still in the barrel. Once i removed the unfired shell I simply pushed the foreend forward and easily extracted the shell. The fired shell was not damaged, and extracted easily. It was definitely not stuck in the barrel. Its like the extractor just slipped off the rim of the spent shell. Ive never had a stuck shell, the barrel is very smooth not tooling marks.
As for the other issue. When I was working the action the new shell would get hung up on the lip of the barrel. I figured the carrier was not coming up fast enough. I was not short stroking and I was working the action like i meant it. As soon as I changed the spring, that problem went away. I'll be shooting again wednesday with the Rio so I will see if it happens again.

Re: New Wingmaster Issues
I don't think you really specified, but is this Wingmaster off-the-shelf new, or just new to you, and previously owned?
The extraction issues sound like they could be due to a worn, damaged, or defective extractor. I'd try swapping in a new one (machined or MIM should work the same, but the MIM pat is less expensive) and see if that improves things. Also, is there any visible damage to the extractor notch in the barrel that could be helping the extractor jump the shell rim?
If this is a used gun, your original carrier dog follower spring could simply have been worn out, they don't last forever. If that was the case, an 1100 carrier latch spring would obviously solve the problem, but so should a replacement standard carrier dog follower spring.
Sorry for the late reply.

Re: New Wingmaster Issues
No worries on late response. So this is a brand new wingmaster. Over the course of a few weeks Ive narrowed it done to ammo. The FTE are happening with Rio shells (steel hull). They dont get stuck, but I think are getting hung up just enough. I switched to Winchester AA (brass hull). No problems. So I shot two round of 5-stand on a Wednesday. 50 rounds of AA perfect performance. Sunday I started with the AA. At one station I loaded up an AA for the first shot and a Rio for the second. Rio FTE. So I went back to AA and finished the course without a problem. Federal seem to work ok, but I have had the same thing happen. Guess I'm sticking to AA shells.

Interesting. I picked up some Rio shells to test out some extensions I'm reviewing; I'll have to see how they run.
