Please help identify this part

Post by retep66 »

I installed a Magpul forend this morning and found this part on my bench when I was done. My eyesight isn't the best and I almost swept it away. I removed the forend, barrel, and breech bolt. Did not mess with the trigger at all. I figure that someone who knows 870's real we'll could identify. Thanks for your help.

In the photo it is the part above the dime.

It's a magazine cap detent.

These are staked into a hole in the barrel guide ring with a spring underneath, and they help to lock the magazine cap down on 870s that use the old-style external ratchet system.

If your 870 doesn't have the new-style plastic spring retainer and matching cap, you'll want to find the spring and re-stake it and the detent back into the barrel guide ring to keep your cap from backing off.

Thank so much. Would never have thought to look there. Luckily my spring was still in!
