New 870 Police Magnum owner, checking in

Post by Chief Brody » Wed Aug 01, 2012 5:48 pm

I'm a beginner to the hobby, been looking forward to being a gun-owner for a very long time. Here's my new 870P, it'll be my home defense gun. Great forum you've got here, lots of good info.

Thanks, guys!
I'm definitely proud to call it mine, very happy with my purchase. Yeah, the Police forend is nice. I like the shorter size, the thumb groove. More comfortable than the forends on the hunting models.

I've already installed a set of Talon QR 1 1/4" sling swivels and waiting for delivery on an M1 Garand-style OD green cotton web sling, as well as the Remington 2-shot mag extension. After that, it's pretty likely that I'll go for the S&J Jumbo safety and detachable velcro shell holder.

Thursday should be my first day on the range with it, first chance to shoot the damn thing haha..
I registered for a course in October, from MDTS, Combative Shotgun Skills 1 + 2. I've heard great things about the class, really excited to have a full day of shooting and some solid instruction.

That is a real nice looking shotgun. I have a question though. I just bought a Rem 870 combo. It is so easy to change the barrels that I was wondering. For home defense. Can I exchange barrels to be pretty much like this police shotgun? I know I don't have the 3 1/2 chamber. But don't really need it. Or... If I changed barrels. Would I then have a 3 1/2 in. chamber?

Yep, you could absolutely -and easily- swap in an 18" barrel. You can find 18" barrels frequently on GunBroker or eBay. I'd even consider selling the one I've got to replace it for one with rifle sights.
I'm not sure about your other question, though. This model shoots 2 3/4" or 3" shells.

I've done a few upgrades since the original post, too:
-OEM 2-shot Extension
-Scattergun Technologies +2 spring
-S&J Hardware delrin follower
-S&J Hardware jumbo head safey (with red automotive touch-up paint added to the Fire side)
-S&J Hardware detachable shell carrier
-M1 Garand-type cotton web sling
-Talon QR sling swivels

Likely future upgrades: 18" barrel with rifle sights - upgraded with tritium sights, and a flashlight.
