Adding a Warning Ring to a Wilson Combat Jumbo Head Safety

This post is from Tommy Geraci, one of the readers of the blog. Tommy sent very useful info on how to add a warning ring to a Wilson Combat Jumbo Head safety. I receive many questions about this, so I think it will be useful for many Remington 870 owners.

Step 1

Heat Shrink Assorted
Heat Shrink Assorted

Buy an assorted box of shrink tubing that has 1/4″ colored tubing.

Step 2

Step 4

Stretch it out with a little with your fingers.

Step 5

Safety Warning Ring

Pull over and set your new warning ring into the warning ring grove

Step 6

Heat shrink the tubing

Heat shrink tubing while turning under a flame in a even circular motion to shrink tubing into the groove.

Step 7

Ensure none of the tubing protrudes past the metal so there is no interference with the smoothness of the safety. Take a little lube and rub the tubing clean then reinstall safety in the trigger group.

Tommy, thanks for this tip!

The Remington 870 is an adored pump-action shotgun that is used by hunters, police officers, target shooters, competitive shooters, and military officers. But like any good weapon, it needs to have a suitable safety button that someone can switch on and off in a moment’s notice. You don’t want to have the risk of not being able to push the button fast enough when you’re in a hurry or desperate situation. The factory safety button that comes with the Remington 870 is a perfect example of this. A lot of owners claim this factory safety button is too small for their fingers, which causes them to waste precious time by having to bring the button close to them and push down hard on it. If you’re in a combat situation or need to shoot something quickly, you must be able to keep your hand on the handle while disengaging the safety at the same time. This can be done with your thumb if the safety button on the weapon is big enough.

All of the available oversized safety buttons are made for right-handed shooters only, check following article if you are left-handed: Left Hand Safety for Remington 870

Tip: Add some oil on the new safety button for smoother work when replacing factory safety button.

Gun Safety Rules by Remington

Gun Safety

Very good video about gun safety rules:

1. All guns are always loaded.
2. Never let the muzzle cover anything you are not willing to destroy.
3. Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on the target.
4. Be sure of your target and what is beyond it.

Be safe!

Test of the Remington Firearms Safety

One more good video with multiple tests of the Remington Firearms Safety (watch from 04:00 for tests):

Tests of the Remington Common Fire Control Mechanism:
-Debris tests
-Drop tests
-Impact tests
-Vibration tests
-Dropping shotgun from the top of the Remington factory

Remington firearms have passed all those tests. You can be sure that they are safe.

I have received new safety from S&J Hardware, it is more rounded and low profile. Previous model of safety for Remington 870 was the best on the market. This time it is even better. I really like that S&J enhances products and develops new upgraded versions.

Remington 870 Jumbo Safety from S&J Hardware is highly recommended! I use it personally and really like it.

Gun Safety Rules by Colonel Jeff Cooper

Recently I have seen a man on a shooting range which was carrying his rifle pointing it in all directions. I think that every gun owner should be careful with his/her firearms. The best gun safety rules I’ve seen are the ones by Jeff Cooper:

1. All guns are always loaded.
2. Never let the muzzle cover anything you are not willing to destroy.
3. Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on the target.
4. Be sure of your target and what is beyond it.

Take care!
