Recently, my great great grandpa's 1878 Colt side by side 10 gauge was handed down to me. I'd love to shoot it, but I'm fresh outta black powder shells, and I know modern ammo is a no-no. My question is, if I used a drop-in gauge reducer, (20 gauge) would I safely be able to shoot a low brass shell without converting my heirloom into scrap metal, or should I just leave it on the mantel?

+1^^^ I definitely wouldn't chance it. Shooting any type of smokeless powder load in a black powder firearm is a big no no. I would even be hesitant to shoot bp loads through it just because of its age and sentimental value it holds.

It may seem odd, but with shotshells, the smaller the bore, the higher the working pressure (with the exception of 3.5" 12ga Franken-shells, which are loaded hotter than even magnum .410s). The SAAMI maximum pressure spec for 20ga guns is 1,000 psi higher than the spec for 10ga. Add in that the gun wasn't designed for the more punishing burn characteristics of modern powders, and that it's closing in on 140 years old, and you're asking for trouble.

With an adapter reinforcing the chamber, I suspect you could shoot a few light 20ga shells without killing yourself, but firearms - especially antique ones - are not something you want to take chances with. Even if nothing spectacular happens, you could FUBAR what sounds like a really cool family heirloom in pretty short order.
