Forgive my dumb question, mag extensions

Post by gWebber » Sun Aug 16, 2020 7:02 am

Ok, I’m a newbie and maybe it’ll show.
I see a ton of mag tube extension discussions ... but my question is ... is it possible to change the whole tube for a longer one instead of the extensions that seem to have issues?

While on the subject, would a plus 1 tube cap create the “gap” issue like longer tubes? Seems to me IF there was any gap, the follower would be sitting on it.

Just random thoughts for the evening

Changing the magazine tube is much more of an endeavor than adding an extension. The magazine tube is very firmly affixed into the receiver. The plus-1 tube cap issue might create problems of the mag spring retainer, since you probably wouldn't have one.

I don’t use a spring retainer In my standard tube, so I don’t see not having a retainer as a big deal.

If I swapped barrels often, that would be a different story, but that’s the only real advantage of a retainer that I can see.

The magtube is silver soldered in place and the rear barrel support Is silver soldered on top of the tube. While it can be replaced, the vast majority of 870 owners can not do it at home. You can not use the spring retainer with any add on magtube extension.

Ok, I see, it’s a job more for a gun smith and could be pricey.
Though it eliminates a number of issues, the cost may not be worth it.
