They are decent but the issue with any 500 series from a Maverick 88 to the 590a1 is the shell lifter can pop out of the receiver and you could be a dead man. I have a couple from the early 70’s and they both look like this.

What is the rationale between the differing length action bar assemblies, 6-1/2" and 7-5/8"? Are they interchangeable?
Any thoughts on this question?

Second thought. Is it possible you were looking at parts from different model shotguns?

Basically earlier and later models. Earlier ones are the 7-5/8 and later is 6-1/2”. Why or which is better I have no clue. My two old ones function fine with the 7-5/8”.

Wondering if it has something to do with the stroke required to reload or cycle the action, but the action length hasn't changed. Longer action bars would just place the fore-end grip farther away, so perhaps by shortening them they brought the grip closer for vertical handgrip-style fore-ends?

I see fore-ends made for one length and fore-ends made for the other length, and would hate to find out that one length doesn't work with some other function of the receiver that I'm building. It's like knowing which barrels work with older, larger 870 receivers but won't work with newer smaller 870 receivers.
