Home defence

Post by ddec1123 » Wed Jan 15, 2020 8:43 pm

I have a Remington 870 express 20" rifled barrel I inherited it from my brother he used it for deer used Sabot slugs

what would I have to do in order to use this for home defense ? I don't hunt . it would seem a slug is not preferred for home defense

they say that 2/34 or 3 inch shells can be used..... but I don't know squat about shot guns

any info to get me started on learning is appreciated

Thanks

Well, barrell swaps are easy enough.

You are correct, that slugs are not optimal for home defense for many reasons, although they do leave a large wound channel. But go to Remington's shopping site and look for a barrel for a HD shotgun, such as this (https://www.remington.com/shop/%21NEW%2 ... ts/p/24517) or here (https://www.gunpartscorp.com/products/1878700). The "2-3/4" means the length of the shell that you're limited to in the chamber, e.g. a 2-3/4" chamber will not load a 3" shell. Most modern barrels comes as 2-3/4" or 3" so you're more versatile. For HD, most folks use larger sizes of shot, anywhere from 0000 Buck to #4 shot. Much higher shots sizes (shot pellet size decreases as the # goes up, so #3 shot is much larger than #8 shot) do less damage. And look for an open-choke, such as cylinder bore or at most improved cylinder. Nothing tighter.

Yes can shoot shot through a rifled barrel, but the twist will cause the shot to spread out fairly fast in a donut pattern.

You can use "up to" 3" shells. Like Banshee stated, the rifled barrel isn't optimal for shot, it's rifled to impart a spin the slugs to stabilize them. But yes, you can shoot shot thru it but it won't be the best pattern. However, if you're just bedroom hallway-distances away from a low-life perp, then pattern density isn't going to be a major concern.

CDNN has 18.5" 870 barrel that uses H&R/Mossberg removable chokes for $79.99, it says it comes with modified and cylinder chokes.
