I haven't hunted with my 870 yet, but I bought it for small game. My double barrel shotgun is nice, but it doesn't allow for quick follow-up shots when you find a flock of ducks or geese, so I think that from now on I'll use it with slugs for bigger game.

I've only had my 870 for a few days but I've managed to get a few grouse with it. Mind you that is what I bought it for.

I bought my first 870 Wingmaster in 1967, it was a 16ga. I hunted grouse, woodcock, rabbits and ducks with it. I bought my first 12ga Wingmaster in 1969 and also that year I bought a 12ga Wingmaster 3" magnum to hunt ducks and geese with. I gave my Dad my 16ga Wingmaster that year as he really liked it. I bought a 20ga Wingmaster in 1971 but then I gave it to a very close friend who needed a shotgun. In 1974 I bought another 20ga Wingmaster which I have owned every since and will till I am gone. In 1983 I traded in my original 12ga in on a new 12ga Wingmaster, and since that time these two 870's have been my go to guns. I have Skeet barrels on both also an extra Imp Cyl barrel for both. I learned over the years with the 12ga at least I never needed anymore than Imp Cyl choke to kill anything I hunted. For grouse, woodcock and at times pheasant I have always used a Skeet choke. For ducks and geese I have used the Imp Cyl barrel with very good results.

I’ve had a 20 gauge Wingmaster since 1965.
I have taken deer, squirrels, rabbits, raccoons,
Turkey, doves, ducks, geese, and bobwhite quail with that gun. It came with a 28 inch full choke barrel with no rib. When I started training and hunting with English pointers I purchased a 26 inch improved cylinder barrel for it. Of corse this was back in the days before choke tubes and I wasn’t about to stick one of those butt ugly Cutts thingys on the muzzle of a beautiful shotgun.

Many times I was able to kill 5 bobwhite quail out of a covey rise with that light, sweet handling 20.

Both of my sons learned wing shooting with that same gun.

I also have had 12 gauge Express 870’s and I use them primarily for ducks, geese, and turkey.
In my opinion there isn’t anything in North America one could not hunt with an 870 and the proper loads.

If you could only have one shotgun for every use you couldn’t do much better than an 870.

Well said. The old timers used 870 Wingmaster Trap Specials to set trap records right and left before the advent of quality, "affordable" over-unders. My 870 Express was my first trap gun, since I figured if I couldn't kill an orange clay with it I had no ethical right going after something alive and flying.

Actually, By 870 probably won't see hunting duty. I have a bear mauler, and a carbon express for hunting. in a pinch, I have a rather inexpensive semi auto 12 gauge for that.

My 870, just like my 590, will see life in .....ummmmm…..

"Pest Control" . Yeah, that's it.

Just got my first 870 a couple of weeks ago. A Wingmaster 12ga.
It will be used for dove, quail, and rabbit in the Arizona Desert!
I can't wait!

Call me a prude, but I'm not a hunter. I could be, easily. My shotguns are for home defense only. Except when our government fucks us over again and I need to hunt for food. I have a hunting buddy that keeps me stocked with goodies like venison, liver, heart, and other lumps of delicious meat. I think it would be easier for me to bead-up on a sub-species human than an innocent deer. However, I do have an appetite. :-)
