870 sps Sureshot SuperSlug for deer

Post by vmax » Wed Mar 07, 2012 12:20 am

Does anyone have this model? I have had many slug guns over the years but this is my fav. The Supercell recoil pad , surshot stock and pinned flutted barrel, tame recoil and offer MOA accuracy. Only down fall is the length and weight ,but this also helps improves the accuracy so for me it's worth it. It has a lighten pull and pollished internals on the trigger group, NEA alum. mag follower, Non MIM extractor, slicked action, 25 1/2 " flutted heavy rifled barrel that is pinned to the reciever, drilled and tapped with a Burris fullfield 3x9x40 scope that works great in low light. This new remmy functions and shoots period. If you were thinking about a slug hunter this is a reasonably priced factory gun with custom gun features. A++ for the big green.

No, but Burris is a cheap optic and it may not hold its zero on that 12ga. The first thing i would try to do is get a good optic to go with it.

Nice setup. The Burris FFII is a decent scope. You don't need to get a Nightforce for a slug gun. What type of scope mount is it? Is it on the receiver or a cantiever mount from the barrel? Since your barrel is pinned it does not matter much. Popular mods to dedicated slug guns was to drill/tap the receiver and barrel shank to tie the two together.

The burris scope is very clear and gathers light better than many more expensive scopes. It holds zero and tests great at the range. In the last year i have bought and sold close to 100 different scopes in every price range. I would say that i curently have about 20 scopes that i use quite often. The burris was a wise choice, if you have ever tried one its a great value and great function. The receiver is drilled and i am using a weaver base. There is no alignment shifting that can happen with loose barrels.

I bought a new 870 with the shurshot stock, rifled cantilever barrel, and scope as a package deal, brand new out of the box. It shot amazing and I am more than happy with all but the scope. It seems like remington just threw the cheapest one they could find on it. just curious what kind of slugs are you shooting out of yours? I am currently using the remington accutips and they are amazing.

Deer hunting is getting close so it's time to mod the 870SS. Ordered a Timney rem 870 trigger fix kit and a new Bushnell 3200 bone collector in 250 DOA. I will review after installed. The scope will have to gather light better than my current burris or i will sell it. Can't wait to feel the trigger. I have modded the factory trigger already but i am currious to see if the kit will reduce creep. If anyone has the Timney kit, do you like it?

vmax, I've heard a lot of positive feedback about Timney kit but have never used it. It would be very interesting to read your review.

Well just shot a 9 point whitetail with my 870 cantilever with the shurshot stock at about 180 yards with a premier accutip. Unbelievable performance from a slug gun.
