any bad 870 years?

Post by bfskinner » Sun Aug 19, 2018 1:08 am

I just ordered a police 870...probably from the 1960's.

This is my first shotgun of any kind. I do like the look of the older shotguns with their worn wood furniture.
Does an older 870 present any particular disadvantages? (ex: unable to accept modifications / accesories)?

The older the Remington 870 the better :) you will get non-MIM extractor and aluminum trigger group. But you may need to get flexitab conversion kit.

The barrel doesn’t have a nut do you mean the magazine nut?

Cover the nut with a piece of leather (old glove) and grip it with some pliers. Loosen counter clock wise.

Remington's made improvements to the 870 design over the years. The one major upgradeis the flex tab fix to the action, but there have also been smaller improvements to things like the magazine follower, extractor, firing pin & spring, shell latches, and so on. Older 870s are still very good guns, and can be upgraded with these improved parts, but newer specimens will already come with them, which can save you a fair bit of work.

Also, a whole lot of older 870s were only set up for 2.75" shells, which isn't necessarily a deal-breaker (2.75" shells are sufficient for most applications), especially since non-magnum guns can be converted to cycle 3" shells without any butchery. But if you do want 3" capabilities, it's a whole lot easier to just start with a magnum model.

A mid-1980s or newer gun will have the flex-tab action and all the really significant improvements. If you go newer than that, you'll get a few more nice things like a high-visibility follower and screw-in chokes becoming pretty much standard on hunting barrels. Even newer, into the 2000s & 2010s, the guns are still good, and have all the upgrades, but you'll also get to the point where Remington really started getting into special models and model-specific features that can potentially make things difficult depending on how you intend to build & use the gun.

Accessories are pretty much all interchangeable, regardless of year. There are a few odd exceptions, but nothing that'll typically stop you from building what you want. Stocks & fore-ends are almost universally-interchangeable among 870s of the same frame size.
