Improving Repairing 870 Express Magnum and 870 Express Super Magnum

Post by kvt978 » Thu Dec 14, 2017 7:57 am

Hello Remington 870 guys,

The case is that I've bought two used 870's. A magnum and a super magnum.

Call me an idiot, but now I realized that none of them actually works, as they're supposed to. (The Super Magnum may work now, as I've tried to polish the chamber, but I haven't had the chance to test it on the shooting range yet).

My brother is going to the U.S., and I am thinking to give the guns one last shot to see, if they can actually be repaired and thus live up to the reputation of Remington 870. I must admit I am a little fed up with it at this point.

The Magnum is from 1992 and the Super Magnum is from 2006

The Magnum has issues with feeding and extracting - I think a replacement of the dog carrier latch spring + new ejector spring will improve this.

The Super Magnum had the "standard" ejection issue - which I think may have been solved after the recent polisment.

Anyway I've decided to give these guns a last chance, especially now that my brother can buy parts in the U.S., which are cheaper than in Europe.

And now finally to my actual question - I made this list at Brownells. Will these parts fit either gun or have I misunderstood something? Are there a difference to Magnum / Super Magnum / Manufacturing date when it comes to ordering parts?

Any help and advice is highly appreciated.

I hope I can become a happy remington 870 owner..

Sorry to hear about your issues. Sticky extraction isn't uncommon on brand-new 870s when shooting cheap modern shotshells with steel cups - especially if the factory grease wasn't cleaned out of the chamber before the gun was fired for the first time. It's usually something that goes away as the gun gets used more.

The feeding and extraction issues with your Magnum model could be something more serious, though. But is it an extraction or ejection issue? You say extraction, but then discuss replacing the ejector. And what exactly was happening during feeding?

Anyway, those parts you listed should all be the same between 12ga Magnum & Super Magnum 870s with the exception of the ejector & ejector spring. Those parts are different on the SuperMag.

Thank you a lot for your reply :-)

The magnum has ejecting issues - sorry for the misunderstanding.

It has issues lifting up the shell to the "before the chamber" place.

And then again problem ejecting the shell.

Now that I have clarified this, would you recommend me to continue with the parts in my list?

Could you by any chance link me to the right ejector / ejector spring for the Magnum and the Super Magnum?

I'd say the carrier dog follower springs are worth replacing, as they're cheap and could be the cause of poor feeding if worn out. Inspect your carrier dog & slide assembly for any obvious wear as well.

As for ejection, look for wear and tear to the ejectors. Maybe have a gunsmith check them out, since you'll probably need a gunsmith if you 're replacing them anyway. If you need parts the part numbers are F99539 & F18855 for the Magnum ejector & ejector spring, respectively. For the SuperMag, the numbers are F99698 & F18855. Apparently the SuperMags do use the normal Magnum ejector spring, and place the front ejector rivet further back to get things to line up properly. I'll have to take a closer look at that next time I'm in a gun shop.

Hello again,

So I ended up buying new parts for replacement.

One pumpgun seems to function well enough now (the one with extracting issues).

However on nr. 2 the ejecting issues continue to exist

My question is, would you consider it to be broken?

Thanks in advance, always.

They are actually both bent, the end should be flat against the receiver.

Hey,

Thanks for the answer, although I could have hoped that it'd been the quite opposite. However it's better to know than not to know.

Not really, the springs are supposed to bend up somewhat when the bolt's not there to hold them down. If they always lay flat against the receiver, they wouldn't do anything to aid in ejection.

So Synchronizer, does this alter the previous conclusion?

Kind regards

If it's got good spring to it when you press on it with a finger, and seems to line up with the shoulder on the ejector properly, I would look elsewhere for the source of your ejection problems. A gummed-up or weak extractor spring, perhaps. Don't rule out the ammo either; try a variety of brands & shell lengths, and see if that has any effect on the frequency & severity of the issues. Even if it's not entirely the ammo's fault, that might help you narrow down other factors. It's really hard for me to say without seeing the malfunctions in person. Have you had a gunsmith look through the gun yet?
