S&J tactical jumbo safety.....maybe too jumbo?

Post by Reaper » Sat May 07, 2016 4:34 am

I picked up a S&J tactical jumbo safety and installed it the other day. WOW, this thing is really jumbo! :o After I flick it to fire position, I can still feel it laying against my trigger finger with my finger on the trigger. Guess I'm just use to not feeling anything at all with the factory flush safety. Yes, I do have rather short, fat fingers. I haven't shot my gun yet with the safety installed, just dry fired, I hope it won't be a problem for me. Anyone have the same problem and or advice? BTW, S&J safety is very well made and easy to install, looks good too.

I've had the same safety in my 870P going on 3 1/2 years. My fingers are pretty slim I'd say and I have no problems whatsoever with it. Huge improvement over the original. You might prefer the Wilson Combat jumbo safety: http://shopwilsoncombat.com/Jumbo-Head- ... nfo/SGJHS/

It's larger than the original but still flat, not dome-shaped. Good luck!

I just installed the improved version S&J jumbo safety button with spring & ball bearing in an 870 model 81198. Very well made, easy installation, and it is very smooth to operate. This safety is a big improvement over the OEM REM 870 safety and is very well suited to my XL hands. .02

I've found that the shape of the gun's stock or grip can really impact whether a safety is oversized or undersized. With a traditional stock that's no wider than the receiver where the two meet, the factory safety is plenty. But with a pistol-gripped stock that overlaps the rear of the trigger guard, an oversized-safety can make more sense.

There are also individual factors like hand size and user technique.

I've got four 870's in 'riot' configuration and have set them all up differently to try other products. I've mounted the S&J, Wilson, Vang Comp and Remington oversize safeties on each SG and prefer the S&J and Vang Comp safeties, although they all work. The SG that I have with me in CO has the S&J.

S&J safety on all of my 870s. Works great and bug improvement.

I like it but it is too big for me. I am working on an oversized safety which will be not that big but still easy to disengage. I have 3D printed a lot of versions during the last year and I think that I found the perfect shape. Will have a metal prototype soon.

I found the same issue that the safety was too big. I ground down the curved raised portion until it was flat, serrated it with a checkering file, & reblued it with cold blue. if you don't have a checkering file, it looks ok being smooth.
