Barrel Interchangability

Post by Prang81 » Sun Dec 03, 2017 11:34 pm

Hi all
I own an 870 Wingmaster manufactured during 1955 and would like to replace the original barrel with one manufactured in 1973. I understand that after 1969, the angle of the rim cut on barrels was changed from 45 degrees to 55 degrees. Will this change create a problem when mating up with my older receiver? I've checked everywhere on internet and can't seem to find a definite answer. Thank you in advance for your help.

The slight angle change is just around the chamber; nowhere where the barrel interacts with the receiver. It should fit your gun just fine.

I forgot to ask. Will the increased angle on the rim affect headspace? That is, will the shell set lower in the chamber? Maybe shotguns don't have headspace.
Thanks again.

Headspace is important for shotguns, just like any firearm. I don't think the rim seat angle is going to make that big of a difference, but if you want to be sure, just stop by a gunsmith for a minute and have them toss their go/no-go gauges in there real quick.
