Suitable shotshells (slugs or Buckshot)for wild boar hunting

Post by raptch » Mon Sep 23, 2013 10:20 am

Hello,
I would like to ask what slugs or buckshot is suitable for
wild boar hunting.
I have a Remington 870 express with 28" barrel and Modified REM Choke.
I would be grateful for any suggestions...
(barrel and choke are NOT rifled (prohibited by law where I live))

I'd love to go hog hunting sometime, but unfortunately they aren't much of a problem in my area (and they probably wouldn't last long if they were). From what I've read though, slugs are the way to go for hog hunting with shotguns. Buckshot doesn't seem to be a good way to put them down quick, especially if you can't get a good angle for the shot.

I've hunted feral hogs for many years, I like buckshot for the most part. we have used slugs and they do work well, I just prefer Buckshot. Most of our shots aren't much more than 10-20 yards. It's fast and nasty. The adrenaline rush is just plain awesome. They are alot faster than most people give them credit for.

The last Boar I killed was with an Ithaca M37 firing Remington Buck Hammer slugs through a 20 inch Deer slayer barrel. It went down like it had been hit with a sledgehammer.
The devil danced as he went down, in the hail of arrows comin' Out on the wild Montana ground, Custer died a-runnin'.

You can't go wrong with the Brenneke K.O. Slug. I've linked the manufacturers website, which lists the recommended game as deer and wild boar, as well as an article from Field and Stream where the author specifically mentions the Brenneke slug. They are mean and cheap, and effective from a smooth bore.

Bigger buckshot: Dixie TriBall Three 22 gauge (.60") 3/4 ounce hard lead pellets at 1100 fps from this 3" 12 gauge load. Type Dixie Tri-Ball into your search engine.
