Question on 2 3/4 and 3 inch shells

Post by ketch » Thu Dec 22, 2016 3:02 pm

I am looking at getting a fully rifled barrel for my 870. Remington's description of the barrel lists it as accepting 2 3/4 and 3 inch shells. Other places describe the barrel as accepting 3 inch. My question is that as long as the barrel is marked 3 inch, can you also shoot 2 3/4 inch shells.

Thank you

A shotgun's chamber length identifies the maximum shell length that can be safely fired in it. Anything shorter is fine, since standard shotshells are essentially straight-walled, and headspace on their rims.

This video explains shell & chamber length in detail.
