Which follower to choose?

Post by Strapy » Sat Dec 01, 2012 8:40 am

OK everyone is doing it, but which one do I pick? Because I built a gun from new, I need to of course change the follower. I have read to stay away from SS. Brownell's has one model that everyone talks about it causing them to lose a round in the mag, (could load 4 but now only 3). Has any one had this problem? Does anyone have any suggestions as to which one to get or stay away from? Thank you all in advance.

I've got this green one from S&J Hardware: http://sjhardware.com/store/modules.php ... cts_id=348

Works great with the Remington 2-shot extension on my 870 Police, never had any problem with it. One great feature, the concave tip on it lets you know you're out touching the follower and not a shell without even looking at it. I got it as part of a package deal with their (also great) jumbo head safety and detachable shell carrier.

I use a VANG stainless steel follower in all of my 870s.

So I have read that the stainless steel followers may or do scratch the inside. Are you find this to be true or not? Or is there something to prevent this?

the one in mine is smooth, no sharp or rough edges to scratch.

Far as I can see, that's a "NO". From what I read, the old 870's came with a metal follower. The only reason Remington stared using plastic follower is to lower production cost. The only thing I would worry about is if your 870 has the dimple inside and you decided to put a extension tube on, then you will have to do some mods on your 870.
