Remington Year of Manufacture Codes maybe found on the barrel of your Remington rifle [or shotgun] on the left side, just forward of the receiver; the first letter of the Code is the month of manufacture, followed by one or two letters which are the year of manufacture. For shotguns with removeable barrels, the code will be valid for the manufacture of the barrel; maybe for the receiver, as barrels do get switched around.

According to the “Blue Book of Gun Values”, the coding continues as follows:

The ejector on my new Remington 870 Tactical broke after only about 200 rounds. Vitaly helped me to diagnose the problem.

He sent this very helpful email advising me of what I needed to do. Since I’m a new shooter, I felt like this repair was a bit over my head, so I called Remington Customer Service.

I called the customer service number and told them about my problem. I believe the gun has a 2 year warranty. I had not sent in my warranty registration card, but they were glad to help me anyway. He told me to send it to the nearest of only 7 or 8 Remington Authorized Repair Centers (RARC). This was Paducah Shooters Supply in Kentucky (http://www.pssguns.com/GunRepair.html). He gave me their address, advised me to ship via UPS, gave me some packing directions, and said that they usually have a quick turnaround of 1-2 weeks. I printed their service form from the website, put all the original parts back on the gun, except for removing the XS front sight and breach choke out of concern for those parts being lost during the repair. I shipped it in the original box, but wrapped it with a padded brown wrap to disguise the identity of the package.

They received the gun on December 6, 2011. It turns out that the repair took about one month. I got it back on January 6, 2012. They decided to replace the whole receiver, and it took a few weeks for Remington to send them a new one. I ended up getting a new serial number. I was also surprised to see that they replaced the XS front sight and breach choke. The sight seems to fit more snugly than the first one which was loose fitting and frequently slid out during shooting. The gun was still in excellent condition after the repair. There were only a few minor scratches around one of the screws on the receiver. They test-fired the gun, and the ejector apparently functioned well.

They hid the cost details on the invoice, but this whole repair was done at no expense to me except for shipping the firearm to the repair center. I’ll look into sending my previous XS sight and choke back.

All in all, I am very pleased with Remington Customer Service and the work of their Authorized Repair Center and look forward to shooting more soon, especially after moving to SC and being able to shoot on my own land now.

OZ-KARA 12 Gauge slug is a Brenneke-style solid lead slug with copper ball inside. This ball fragments slug into several parts when it hits the target. Also it allows better penetration of the target.

OZ-KARA slug has fins cast onto the outside and a plastic wad attached to the projectile. This wad serves as a gas seal and stabilizez slug after firing.

I have not tested it but heard good feedback about Oz Kara slug. This can be a good choice for reloading.

I plan to get a Lee Load-All 12 reloader soon and test different types of slugs for a shotgun.

This is frontal shooting stance which is used by most competitive, law enforcement and military shooters.

1. Lean forward. This is very important and enables you to control recoil even after numerous shots.

2. Cheek weld. Put your face down on the stock. Shotgun should be placed between your eyes and target. That means that you need to learn how to put your shotgun exactly on a target when lifting it up.

3. Bring a shotgun tightly to a shoulder. If it is loose the stock will hit your shoulder shot after shot and you will come back from a range with black and blue shoulder.

4. Flex your knees, this way you will be able to control recoil with your body.

5. Don’t stick your right elbow out. Hold your elbows tucked in close to your chest. This will minimize your silhouette which is very important in home defense situation. Also, this ensures better maneuverability in close quarters environment.

6. Stand with feet about shoulder width apart.

7. Don’t put your left hand too far farward on the forend. Remeber that forend on Remington 870 located far from shooter, so you need to find a comfortable position or install a longer forend.

Practice often and you will have a proper shotgun shooting stance which will help you to shoot fast and accurately.

Please don’t hesitate to comment if you have any questions.

I’ve just found list of differences between Remington 870 Express and Remington 870 Police. Most of the parts which are used on Remington 870 Police are easy to get and install on the Express version of a shotgun.

870 Police shotguns go thru a special 23 station check list – ranging from visual inspection, functional testing, test firing, and final inspection.

All Police shotguns are assembled in a “special build area” at the plant in Ilion, NY. This section is secured and serves only to build LE and Military shotguns, with the same factory personnel working at that assignment each shift.

All parts that enter the “special build area” are visually inspected by hand to ensure top quality and functionality.

Due to heavy recoil in buck and slug loads, all 870 Police guns have a longer magazine spring which ensures positive feed and function.

A heavier sear spring is used to generate a reliable, positive trigger pull between 5 and 8 lbs.

A heavier carrier dog spring is used to ensure when the carrier elevates the shell, it will be held there until the bolt can push it into the chamber. This ensures positive feeding when using heavier payload rounds.

Police shotguns do not have an ISS (Integrated Safety System) which is a locking mechanism on the safety of commercial shotguns. This type of locking mechanism can cause delay to an officer who needs the weapon but does not have the appropriate key. LE shotguns have the standard, proven, cross bolt safety.

The fore-end on the Express model is longer and not compatible with many police shotgun vehicle racks.

The Police shotguns utilize the heavy duty SPEEDFEED Stocks and Fore-ends.

The Express model will not allow for the addition of an extension tube without physical modification to the tube and barrel, which can nullify the warranty.

The Express model has a BEAD BLAST BLUE finish while the Police models utilize either High Luster bluing or Parkerization.

The Express model utilizes a synthetic trigger housing while the Police models use a compressed metal housing.

The Police shotgun barrel is locked down with a “ball detent” system in conjunction with the magazine cap vs. a lesser grade “synthetic magazine spring retainer” lock down as used on the Express system.

The receivers used in Police guns are “vibra honed” to smooth out rough finishes and remove burrs before parkerization or bluing.

Police shotguns use machined ejectors and extractors, as opposed to powdered metal cast which are utilized on the Express models.

Today I have spent several hours on a shooting range on a shotgun tranining with Sergii Streltsov, Champion of Ukraine (standard-manual division).

Sergii is a very good instructor. He shares his experience and helps shoot faster and more accurately. Also, he gives a lot of advices about shotgun shooting and reloading techniques.

Other important parts he teaches are tactical and psychological trainings. Tactical preparation allows you to choose gameplan for each stage and situation. Psychological training enables you to shoot fast and accurate under stress.

I will ask Sergii to give shooting tips to the readers of the rem870.com blog.
